Pons of Tripoli From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Pons of Tripoli (c. 1098?1137) was the son of Bertrand of Tripoli, andwas count of Tripoli fr om 1112 to 1137. Pons married Cecile of France, the widow of his mentor Tancred, Princeof Galilee and daughte r of Philip I of France. This marriage helped toreconcile the Norman and Provençal Crusaders , who had fallen outduring the Siege of Antioch. In 1118 he allied with Baldwin II, the new king of Jerusalem, and in1119 the two marched nort h to aid Roger of Salerno against an invasionby Il-ghazi. Roger decided not to wait for them , and he and his armywere slaughtered at the Battle of Ager Sanguinis; Baldwin II was laterta ken hostage. In 1124, after Baldwin had been released, Pons helped capture Tyre, one of the last coastal ci ties remaining in Muslim hands. In 1125 heaided in the Crusader victory at the Battle of Azaz . In 1131 Pons cameinto conflict with Fulk of Jerusalem, who had ascended to the thronethat y ear, and was defeated at the Battle of Rugia. In 1137 Tripoli was invaded by the sultan of Damascus, and Pons waskilled in battle. He was s ucceeded by his son Raymond II.

Notes:

Raymond II of Tripoli From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Raymond II of Tripoli (c. 1115?1152) was count of Tripoli from 1137 to1152. He was the son of Pons of Tripoli and Cecile of France. In 1137 hemarried Hodierna of Rethel , daughter of Baldwin II, king of Jerusalem. He succeeded his father later that year, after Po ns was killed in abattle with the army of Damascus. Raymond was present at the battle, and con sidered the Syrian Christians of Tripoli responsible for thetreachery which led to his father 's defeat and death. Therefore, afterthe battle he took many of them prisoner, and as Willia m of Tyre says,"visited upon them divers tortures in the presence of the people, and,in jus t proportion to the enormity of the crime which they hadcommitted, he caused them to suffer d eath in its most cruel forms."This act was praised by the Latin Christians of the county; "Su ch",William continues, "were the first proofs of valor which were given bythe young count, wh ereby he won the affection of all his people anduniversal approval." Later that year, Zengi, the atabeg of Aleppo and Mosul, besieged thecastle of Barin in the te rritory of Tripoli. Raymond called for helpfrom King Fulk of Jerusalem, but Zengi defeated th em in a pitchedbattle outside the castle, and Raymond was taken prisoner. Zengicontinued th e siege, but began negotiations with the besieged when heheard that further relief was on it s way from Raymond of Antioch,Joscelin II of Edessa, and Byzantine emperor John II Comnenus , who wasin Antioch at the time. Those besieged in Barin did not know of thesemovements but r eadily agreed to hand over the castle to Zengi inexchange for the release of Raymond and an e nd to the siege. In 1142 Raymond established the Knights Hospitaller as a force in theCounty, donating to the m Krak des Chevaliers, an enormous fortress onthe road from Damascus to the Mediterranean Sea , as well as othersmaller castles. The Hospitallers were virtually independent in theCounty a nd were often responsible for the protection of Tripoli'sborders, which were often raided b y Damascus and the forces of Zengi. Raymond was a great-grandson of Raymond IV of Toulouse, one of theleaders of the First Crusad e who had claimed the County of Tripolibefore Tripoli had even been captured (thus Raymond I I is numbered asif his great-grandfather was the first Count of Tripoli by that name). However , Raymond II was descended from him through Bertrand ofToulouse, an illegitimate son. When Ra ymond IV's legitimate sonAlfonso-Jordan arrived during the Second Crusade in 1147, it wasfear ed that he might enforce his more claim on the county.Alfonso-Jordan died suddenly on the wa y to Jerusalem, and it wasimmediately suspected that he was poisoned, possibly by QueenMelise nde of Jerusalem on behalf of her sister, Raymond's wifeHodierna. This charge was never prove n, but Raymond refused to offerany assistance to the crusade, which ended in failure. Afterwa rds,Alfonso-Jordan's son (also named Bertrand, and also illegitimate)captured the castle of A raima in Tripoli, and Raymond sought help fromZengi's son and heir Nur ad-Din, as well as Mu' in ad-Din Unur, thegovernor of Damascus. They captured Araima, returned it to Raymond, and too k Betrand and his family prisoner. Raymond often quarrelled with his wife. Hodierna was very independent, but Raymond was a jealo us husband and kept her in seclusion. Therewere also rumours that their daughter Melisende wa s fathered by adifferent man. Hodierna's sister Melisende, namesake of her daughter, was invit ed to mediate in 1152. Raymond and Hodierna were reconciled, but Melisende thought it would b e best if Hodierna return to Jerusalemwith her for a short time. Raymond rode out with them f or a shortdistance, and on his way back to Tripoli, he was killed by theHashshashin at the ga tes to the city, along with two of his knights. He was the first non-Muslim to be killed by th e Hashshashin, probablyin response to Raymond's establishment of the Hospitallers in theCount y. Hodierna immediately returned to assume the regency of thecounty for her son Raymond III , who was still a child. Hodierna'snephew Baldwin III of Jerusalem ensured the support of th e nobles ofthe county, and Hodierna allowed him to give the castle of Tortosa tothe Knights T emplar, in order to defend from an attack by Nur ad-Din,who invaded when he heard of Raymond' s death. Raymond and Hodierna's daughter Melisende was later a candidate tomarry Byzantine emperor Man uel I Comnenus. Melisende was even referredto as "the future empress," but the emperor, perha ps hearing of hersupposed illegitimacy, instead chose Maria of Antioch. Raymond's sonand Meli sende's brother Raymond III felt personally slighted by this, and attacked Cyprus in reliation .

Morphia of Melitene From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Morphia of Melitene, or Morfia, (died c. 1126) was the wife of BaldwinII, king of the crusade r Kingdom of Jerusalem. Morphia was the daughter of an Armenian nobleman named Gabriel (orKhoril, in Armenian), the r uler of the city of Melitene. Althoughethnically Armenian, the family practised the Greek Ort hodox faith.Melitene was a neighbour of the crusader County of Edessa, and Gabrielsoon becam e a vassal of the county. The future Baldwin II of Jerusalemwas also count of Edessa after 11 00, and he consolidated his positionin the county by marrying Morphia around 1101. Gabriel, w ho was verywealthy, gave 50 000 gold bezants as a dowry. Baldwin and Morphia hadfour daughter s: Melisende, Alice, Hodierna, and Ioveta. When Baldwin became King of Jerusalem in 1118, Morphia and herchildren remained in Edessa. Af ter the Muslim victory at the Battle ofAger Sanguinis in 1119, Baldwin returned to the nort h to respond tothe threat. After having secured the crusader territories, he returnedhome i n 1120 with his family, and Morphia was finally crowned asqueen. Morphia went back north whe n Baldwin was taken captive whilepatrolling the borders of Edessa in 1123, and helped ensur e hisrelease by offering their young daughter Ioveta as a hostage. According to the Melisende Psalter, Morphia died on October 1, but theyear is unknown; it wa s either 1126 or 1127, more likely 1126. With nomale heir, Baldwin II designated Melisende, h is oldest daughter, ashis heir, and married her to Fulk V of Anjou. Two of their otherdaughte rs also married influential crusader lords: Alice marriedBohemund II of Antioch, and Hodiern a married Raymond II of Tripoli.Ioveta became a nun. Morphia was probably partially responsible for the Greek and Armeniancultural influences tha t appeared in the Latin kingdom. Art from thekingdom, such as the Melisende Psalter, often sh ows a mixture ofeastern and western styles, just as the western crusaders had begun toaccusto m themselves to eastern culture. Morphia was buried at theabbey of St. Mary Josaphat, just ou tside of Jerusalem. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphia_of_Melitene"

Notes:

Melisende of Jerusalem From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Melisende (1105 ? September 11, 1161) was Queen of Jerusalem from 1131to 1153. Melisende was the eldest daughter of King Baldwin II of Jerusalem andthe Armenian princess Mo rphia of Melitene. She was named after herpaternal grandmother, Melisende of Montlhery, wif e of Hugh I, Count ofRethel. She had three younger sisters: Alice, princess of Antioch;Hodier na, countess of Tripoli; and Ioveta, abbess of St. Lazarus inBethany. Inheritance Jerusalem had recently been conquered by Christian Franks in 1099during the First Crusade, an d was ruled by a dynasty origionally fromthe County of Rethel in France. Melisende was the he ir of thisdynasty, and was designated her father's successor before 1129. Womenwho inherite d territory usually did so because war and violencebrought many men to premature death, and w omen who were recognized asqueen regnant rarely exercised their authority. Contemporaries ofM elisende who did rule, however, included Urraca of Castile(1080-1129), Empress Matilda (1102- 1169), and Eleanor of Aquitaine(1121-1204). Melisende's authority was not passed over for he r son butwas independent of it, as William of Tyre wrote reseditque reginamregni potestas pen es dominam Melisendem, Deo amabilem reginam, cuijure hereditario competebat ("the rule of th e kingdom remained in thepower of the lady queen Melisende, a queen beloved by God, to whom i tpassed by hereditary right"). Melisende was no mere regent-queen (forher son Baldwin III), b ut a Queen Regnant, reigning by right ofhereditary and civil law. During her father's reign Melisende was styled filia regis et regniJerosolimitani haeres ("da ughter of the king and heir of the kingdomof Jerusalem") and took precedence above other nobl es and Christianclergy in ceremonial occasions. Increasingly she was associated withher fathe r on official documents, including in the minting of money, granting of fiefdoms and other for ms of patronage, and in diplomaticcorrespondence. Baldwin raised his daughter as a capable su ccessor tohimself and Melisende enjoyed the support of the Haute Cour, a kind ofroyal counci l comprising the nobility and clergy of the realm. However, Baldwin also thought that he would have to marry Melisende toa powerful ally, one wh o would protect and safeguard Melisende'sinheritance as Queen and her future heirs. His inten tion was for aconsort for his daughter, not a reigning king-consort. Baldwin choseFulk V of A njou, a renowned crusader and military commander, and inthe future the paternal grandfather o f Henry Plantagenet (Fulk's sonof previous marriage, Geoffrey was in these same years marrie d toEmpress Matilda, Henry I of England's designated heir as England'snext Queen regnant). Th roughout the negotiations Fulk insisted onbeing joint ruler with Melisende. Baldwin acquiesce d to these demandsas Fulk was relatively rich (even for a crusader) and would bringtroops an d much military experience with him in defense of Jerusalem.Melisende bore a son and heir i n 1130, the future Baldwin III. As anindication of Baldwin II's intentions to make Melisend e sole queen andto strengthen her position, he designated Melisende as guardian forthe youn g Baldwin, excluding Fulk altogether. After Baldwin II's death in 1131, Melisende and Fulk ascended to thethrone as joint rulers. H owever, with the aid of his crusader knightsFulk excluded Melisende from granting titles an d other forms ofpatronage, and publicly dismissed her authority. This treatment oftheir Quee n irritated the members of the Haute Cour, whose ownpositions would be eroded if Fulk continu ed to dominate the realm. Palace intrigue The estrangement between husband and wife was a convenient politicaltool that Fulk used in 11 34 when he accused Hugh II of Le Puiset,Count of Jaffa, of having an affair with Melisende. H ugh was the mostpowerful baron in the kingdom, and devotedly loyal to the memory ofBaldwin II . This loyalty now extended to Melisende, though Hugh, bystrict male succession, held a bette r claim to the throne. Hugh was acousin of Melisende, and also a member of the royal family.C ontemporary sources, such as William of Tyre, discount the infidelityof Melisende and instea d point out that Fulk overly favoured newlyarrived Frankish crusaders from Anjou over the nat ive nobility of thekingdom. Had Melisende been guilty the church and nobility likelywould no t have later rallied to her cause. Hugh allied himself with the Muslim city of Ascalon, and was able tohold off the army set aga inst him. He could not maintain his positionindefinitely, however. His alliance with Ascalo n cost him support atcourt. The Patriarch negotiated lenient terms for peace, and Hugh wasexi led for three years. Soon thereafter an unsuccessful assassinationattempt against Hugh was at tributed to Fulk or his supporters. Thiswas reason enough for the queen's party to openly cha llenge Fulk, asFulk's unfounded assertions of infidelity was a public affront thatwould damag e Melisende's position entirely. Through what amounted to a palace coup, the queen's supportersovercame Fulk, and from 1135 on wards Fulk's influence rapidlydeteriorated. One historian wrote that Fulk's supporters "wen t interror of their lives" in the palace. William of Tyre wrote that Fulk"did not attempt t o take the initiative, even in trivial matters, without (Melisende's) knowledge". Husband an d wife reconciled by 1136and a second son, Amalric, was born. When Fulk was killed in a hunti ngaccident in 1143, Melisende publicly and privately mourned for him. Melisende's victory was complete. Again she is seen in the historicalrecord granting titles o f nobility, fiefdoms, appointments andoffices, granting royal favours and pardons and holdin g court. OfMelisende, William of Tyre wrote "reseditque reginam regni potestaspenes dominam M elisendem, Deo amabilem reginam, cui jure hereditariocompetebat." Melisende was no mere regen t-queen for her son BaldwinIII, but a Queen Regnant, reigning by right of hereditary and civi llaw. Patroness of the church and arts Melisende enjoyed the support of the church throughout her lifetime;from her appointment as B aldwin II's successor, throughout theconflict with Fulk, and later when Baldwin III would com e of age. In1138 she founded the large convent of St. Lazarus in Bethany where heryounger sis ter Ioveta would rule as abbess. In keeping with a royalabbey, Melisende granted the conven t the fertile plains of Jericho.Additionally, the queen supplied rich furnishings and liturgi calvessels, so that it would not be in any way inferior to religioushouses for men. Accordin g to author and historian Bernard Hamilton,Melisende also gave large "endowments to the Hol y Sepulchre, our Ladyof Josaphat, the Templum Domini, the order of the Hospital, the leperhos pital of Saint Lazarus, and the Praemonstratensians of SaintSamuel's." Sometime between 1131 and 1143, the queen commissioned the MelisendePsalter. Though influence d by Byzantine and Italian traditions in theilluminations, the artists who contributed to i t had a unique anddecidedly Jerusalem style. The historian Buchtal wrote that "Jerusalemdurin g the second quarter of the twelfth century possessed aflourishing and well-established scrip torium which could, withoutdifficulty, undertake a commission for a royal manuscript de grand luxe". Bernard Hamilton argues that Melisende must be given credit forsponsoring the artist s in her realm. Second Crusade In 1144 the Crusader State County of Edessa was besieged in a borderwar that threatened its s urvival. Queen Melisende responded by sendingan army led by constable Manasses of Hierges, Ph ilip of Milly, andElinand of Bures. Raymond of Antioch ignored the call for help, as hisarm y was already occupied against the Byzantine Empire in Cilicia.Despite Melisende's army, Edes sa fell. Melisende sent word to the Pope in Rome, and the west called for aSecond Crusade. The crusade r expedition was led by French King Louisand the German Emperor Conrad II. Accompanying Loui s was his wifeEleanor of Aquitaine, with her own vassal lords in tow. Eleanor hadherself bee n designated by her father, William IX, to succeed him inher own right, just as Melisende ha d been designated to succeed herfather. During the Crusader meeting in Acre in 1148 the battle strategy wasplanned. Conrad and Loui s advised 16-year old Baldwin III to attackthe Muslim city-state of Damascus, though Melisend e, Manasses, andEleanor wanted to take Aleppo, which would aid them in retakingEdessa. The me eting ended with Damascus as their target. Damascus andJerusalem were on very good diplomati c terms and there was a peacetreaty between them. The result of this breach of treaty was tha tDamascus would never trust the Crusader states again, and the loss ofa sympathetic Muslim st ate was a blow from which later monarchs ofJerusalem could not recover. After 11 months Elean or and Louisdeparted for France, ending the Second Crusade. Mother and son Melisende's relationship with her son was complex. As a mother shewould know her son and hi s capabilities, and she is known to have beenparticularly close to her children. As a ruler s he may have beenreluctant to entrust decision making powers to an untried youth.Either way th ere was no political or social pressure to grant Baldwinany authority before 1152, even thoug h Baldwin reached majority in1145. Baldwin III and Melisende were jointly crowned as co-ruler s onChristmas Day, 1143. This joint crowning was similar to Melisende'sown crowning with he r father in 1128, and may have reflected a growingtrend to crown one's heir in the present mo narch's lifetime, asdemonstrated in other realms of this period. Baldwin grew up to be a capable, if not brilliant, military commander.By age 24 however, Bald win felt he could take some responsibility ingovernance. Melisende had hitherto only partiall y associated Baldwinin her rule. Tension between mother and son mounted between 1150 and1152 , with Baldwin blaming Manasses for alienating his mother fromhim. The crisis reached a boili ng point early 1152 when Baldwindemanded the patriarch Fulcher to crown him in the Holy Sepul chre, without Melisende present. The Patriarch refused. Baldwin, in protest, staged a processio n in the city streets wearing laurel wreaths, a kindof self-crowning. Baldwin and Melisende agreed to put the decision to the Haute Cour. The Haute Cour decided tha t Baldwin would rule the north of thekingdom and Melisende the richer Judea and Samaria, an d Jerusalemitself. Melisende acquiesced, though with misgivings. This decisionwould preven t a civil war but also divide the kingdom's resources.Though later historians criticized Meli sende for not abdicating infavor of her son, there was little impetus for her to do so. She w asuniversally recognized as an exceptional steward for her kingdom, andher rule had been char acterized as a wise one by church leaders andother contemporaries. Baldwin had not shown an y interest in governanceprior to 1152, and had resisted responsibility in this arena. TheChur ch clearly supported Melisende, as did the barons of Judea andSamaria. Despite putting the matter before the Haute Cour, Baldwin was nothappy with the partition an y more than Melisende. But instead ofreaching further compromise, within weeks of the decisio n he launchedan invasion of his mother's realms. Baldwin showed that he was Fulk'sson by quic kly taking the field; Nablus and Jerusalem fell swiftly.Melisende with her younger son Amalri c and others sought refuge in theTower of David. Church mediation between mother and son resu lted withthe grant of the city of Nablus and adjacent lands to Melisende torule for life, an d a solemn oath by Baldwin III not to disturb herpeace. This peace settlement demonstrated th at though Melisende lostthe "civil war" to her son, she still maintained great influence anda voided total obscurity in a convent. Retirement By 1153 son and mother had been reconciled. Since the civil war,Baldwin had shown his mothe r great respect. Melisende's connections, especially to her sister Hodierna, and to her niec e Constance ofAntioch, meant that she had direct influence in northern Syria, apriceless conn ection since Baldwin had himself broken the treaty withDamascus in 1147. As Baldwin III was often on military campaigns he realized he had fewreliable advisers. Fro m 1154 onwards she is again associated with herson in many of his official public acts. In 11 56 she concluded atreaty with the merchants of Pisa. In 1157, with Baldwin on campaignin Anti och, Melisande saw an opportunity to take el-Hablis, whichcontrolled the lands of Gilead beyo nd the Jordan. Also in 1157, on thedeath of patriarch Fulcher, Melisende, her half-sister Sib ylla ofFlanders, and Ioveta the Abbess of Bethany, had Amalric of Nesleappointed as patriarc h of Jerusalem. Additionally, Melisende waswitness to her son Amalric's marrage to Agnes of C ourtenay in 1157. In1160 she gave her assent to a grant made by her son Amalric to theHoly Se pulchre, perhaps on the occasion of the birth of hergranddaughter Sibylla to Agnes and Amalri c. Death In 1161 Melisende had what appears to be a stroke. Her memory wasseverely impaired and she co uld no longer take part in state affairs. Her sisters, the countess of Tripoli and abbess of B ethany, came tonurse her before she died on September 11, 1161. Melisende was buriednext to h er mother Morphia in the shrine of Our Lady of Josaphat.Melisende, like her mother, bequeathe d property to the Orthodoxmonastery of Saint S'eba. William of Tyre, writing on Melisende's 30-year reign, wrote that "shewas a very wise woman , fully experienced in almost all affairs ofstate business, who completely triumphed over th e handicap of her sexso she could take charge of important affairs...", and "striving toemula te the glory of the best princes, (Melisende) ruled the kingdomwith such ability that she wa s rightly considered to have equalled herpredecessors in that regard." William of Tyre's comm ents may seemrather patronizing to a modern audience, wrote professor BernardHamilton of th e University of Nottingham, however this was a greatshow of respect from a society and cultur e in which women wereregarded with less rights and authority then their brothers, fathers,an d even sons.
