Robert II of Flanders (c. 1065 - October 5, 1111) was count ofFlanders from 1093 to 1111. H e became known as Robert of Jerusalemafter his exploits in the First Crusade. He was the eldest son of Robert I of Flanders and Gertrude of Holland. Robert died near Meaux from a wound he received while aiding hisoverlord, King Louis VI of Fr ance, against Theobald of Blois. He married Clementia of Burgundy, and was succeeded by their sonBaldwin VII of Flanders.

Baldwin left no children, and was succeeded by his first cousinCharles the Good.

Mauger of Hauteville From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Mauger of Hauteville (also Latin Malgerius or Italian Maugerio) was ayounger (probably the se cond) son of Tancred of Hauteville by hissecond wife, Fressenda. He travelled to the Mezzogio rno with hisbrother William and his elder half-brother Geoffrey around 1053,though some sourc es indicate him coming later, c.1056. He soon distinguished himself and was invested with the county of theCapitanate soon after hi s arrival (either 1053 or 1057) by Humphrey,his half brother and count of Apulia, but he di d not long survive tohold it. According to Goffredo Malaterra, he died in 1054, thoughother c hroniclers have him dying in 1057 or as late as 1060, afterassisting his elder full brother R obert Guiscard, Humphrey'ssuccessor, in an expedition against the new army of the ByzantineEm peror Constantine X, sent to recover Langobardia. William Iron Arm From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia William Iron Arm[1] (born before 1010 ? died 1046) was a Normanadventurer, founder of the for tunes of the Hauteville family. He was ason of Tancred of Hauteville, who, along with his you nger brotherDrogo, journeyed to the Mezzogiorno in the first half of the eleventhcentury (c.1 035) in response to calls of aid from fellow Normans underRainulf Drengot, count of Aversa. Between 1038 and 1040, he fought in Sicily. It was there that he wonhis nickname Iron Arm, b y single-handedly killing the emir of Syracuseduring a sally at the siege of Syracuse while f ighting for the Greeks.When the Greek general Giorgio Maniace publicly humiliated theSalernit an leader, Arduin, the Lombards, along with their mercenaryNormans and the Varangian Guard co ntingent, left. Maniace wasconsequently disgraced by the emperor in Constantinople and the ne wcatepan of Italy, Michael Doukeianos, appointed Arduin ruler at Melfi.The Normans of Willia m followed him and soon they were all in revoltwith the Apulian Lombards. First Atenulf, Prin ce of Benevento, andthen Argyrus, the nominal leaders of the revolt, were bought off bythe Gr eeks and the Normans elected their own leader, ignoring Arduin.The revolt, originally Lombard , had become Norman in character andleadership. In September 1042, William was elected by Normans as their "count"after the defection of Argy rus. He and the other leaders, chief amongthem Drogo and Peter, petitioned Guaimar IV, Princ e of Salerno, forrecognition of their conquests. They received the lands around Melfias a fie f and proclaimed Guaimar "Duke of Apulia and Calabria". AtMelfi in 1043, Guaimar divided th e region (except for Melfi itself)into twelve baronies for the benefit of the Norman leaders : Asclettinreceived Acerenza, Tristan received Montepeloso, Hugh Tub?uf receivedMonopoli, Pet er received Trani, and Drogo received Venosa. Williamhimself, predominant among the Norman le aders, received the lordshipof Ascoli. He was married to Guida, daughter of Guy, duke of Sorr ento,and niece of Guaimar. During his reign, William and Guaimar began the conquest of Calabriain 1044 and built the gre at castle of Stridula, probably nearSquillace. In 1045, he was defeated near Taranto by Argyr us. He diedin early 1046 and was succeeded by his brother Drogo. His titles were never confirmed by the Holy Roman Emperor. Drogo wouldbe legally called "Coun t of the Normans in all Apulia and Calabria"(Comes Normannorum totius Apuliae e Calabriae), a nd so William isusually titled likewise.

Roger I of Sicily From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Roger I (1031 ? June 22, 1101), called Bosso and the Great Count, wasthe Norman Count of Sici ly from 1071 to 1101. Biography Roger was the youngest son of Tancred of Hauteville by his second wifeFredisenda. He arrive d in Southern Italy soon after 1055. Malaterra, who compares Robert Guiscard and his brother to "Joseph andBenjamin of old," say s of Roger: "He was a youth of the greatestbeauty, of lofty stature, of graceful shape, mos t eloquent in speechand cool in counsel. He was far-seeing in arranging all his actions,pleas ant and merry all with men; strong and brave, and furious inbattle." He shared with Robert Gu iscard the conquest of Calabria, andin a treaty of 1062 the brothers in dividing the conques t apparentlymade a kind of "condominium" by which either was to have half of everycastle an d town in Calabria. Robert now resolved to employ Roger's genius in reducing Sicily, whichcontained, besides th e Moslems, numerous Greek Christians subject toArab princes who had become all but independen t of the sultan ofTunis. In May 1061 the brothers crossed from Reggio and capturedMessina. Af ter Palermo had been taken in January 1072 Robert Guiscard,as suzerain, invested Roger as cou nt of Sicily, but retained Palermo,half of Messina and the north-east portion (the Val Demone ). Not till1085, however, was Roger able to undertake a systematic crusade. In March 1086 Syracuse surrendered, and when in February 1091 Notoyielded the conquest was co mplete. Much of Robert's success had beendue to Roger's support. Similarly the latter support ed Duke Roger, hisnephew, against Bohemund, Capua and his rebels, and the realleadership of t he Hautevilles passed to the Sicilian count. In returnfor his aid against Bohemund and his re bels the duke surrendered tohis uncle in 1085 his share in the castles of Calabria, and in 10 91the half of Palermo. Roger's rule in Sicily was more real than RobertGuiscard's in Italy. A t the enfeoffments of 1072 and 1092 no greatundivided fiefs were created, and the mixed Norma n, French and Italianvassals owed their benefices to the count. No feudal revolt ofimportanc e therefore troubled Roger. Politically supreme, the countbecame master of the insular Church . While he gave full toleration tothe Greek Churches, he created new Latin bishoprics at Syra cuse andGirgenti and elsewhere, nominating the bishops personally, while heturned the archbis hopric of Palermo into a Catholic see. The Papacy, favouring a prince who had recovered Sicily from Greeksand Moslems, granted to hi m and his heirs in 1098 the ApostolicLegateship in the island. Roger practised general tolera tion to Arabsand Greeks, allowing to each race the expansion of its owncivilization. In the c ities the Moslems, who had generally securedsuch terms of surrender, retained their mosques , their kadis, andfreedom of trade; in the country, however, they became serfs. He drewfrom t he Moslems the mass of his infantry, and Saint Anselm visitinghim at the siege of Capua, 1098 , found "the brown tents of the Arabsinnumerable." Nevertheless the Latin element began to pr evail with theLombards and other Italians who flocked into the island in the wake ofthe conqu est, and the conquest of Sicily was decisive in the steadydecline from this time of Mahommeda n power in the westernMediterranean. Roger, the "Great Count of Sicily," died on June 22 1101 in hisseventieth year and was burie d in S. Trinità of Mileto. He married 3 times. The first marriage took place in 1061, to Judith,daughter of William, cou nt of Évreux (in Normandy) and Hawisa ofÉchauffour. She died in 1076, leaving daughters: A daughter, married Hugues of Gircea Matilda, married Raymond IV of Toulouse Adelisa, married Henry, Count of Monte San Angelo Emma, briefly engaged to King Philip I of France; married RalphMaccabees, count of Montecagli oso In 1077 Roger married a second time, to Eremburge of Mortain, daughterof William, count of Mo rtain (also in Normandy). Their daughters were: Mathilda, married Robert, Count of Eu Felicia, married King Coloman of Hungary His last wife was Adelaide del Vasto, niece of Boniface, lord ofSavona. They married in 1087 . Their children were: Simon Roger Maximilla, married Conrad, son of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV Matilda, married Ranulf, count of Alife From perpective of history of Malta, Roger I was also the firstChristian overlord of this arc hipelago. Adelaide del Vasto From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Adelaide del Vasto (c. 1075?April 16, 1118) was the wife of Roger I ofSicily and mother of Ro ger II of Sicily, as well as queen of Jerusalemdue to her later marriage to Baldwin I of Jeru salem. She was the daughter of Manfred del Vasto, brother of Boniface,marquis of Montferrat, and mar ried Roger I in 1089. Roger I died in1101, and Adelaide ruled as regent of Sicily for her you ng son RogerII. Meanwhile, in Jerusalem, after the death of Baldwin's first wifeGodehilde during the First Cr usade, Baldwin married an Armeniannoblewoman traditionally known as Arda. Arda was useful i n an alliancewith the Armenians while Baldwin was Count of Edessa, but when hebecame King o f Jerusalem in 1100 he seemed to have little use for anArmenian wife, and Arda was forced int o a convent around 1105. In 1112 a new marriage was sought for the king. Arnulf of Chocques,Latin Patriarch of Jerusal em, suggested that Baldwin marry Adelaide,as Roger II was now old enough to rule Sicily alone . Baldwin sentambassadors to Sicily, and somewhat hastily agreed to any terms whichAdelaide m ight have; Adelaide demanded that their son, should theyhave one, inherit Jerusalem, and if t hey had no children, the kingdomwould pass to her own son Roger II. Adelaide brought with he r anenormous amount of badly-needed money, as well as some Muslim archersand a thousand othe r Sicilian soldiers. Adelaide was already well into middle age and no new heir wasimmediately forthcoming. The kin g was blamed for a bigamous marriage(as Arda was still alive) and the Patriarch Arnulf was de posed. PopePaschal II agreed to reinstate him in 1116, provided that he annul themarriage bet ween Baldwin and Adelaide. Baldwin agreed, after fallingill and assuming that renouncing hi s sin of bigamy would cure him. In1117 the annulment was performed at Acre, and Adelaide sail ed back toSicily. Adelaide died on April 16, 1118 and was buried in Patti. Roger II wasoutraged at the treatmen t of his mother and never forgave the Kingdomof Jerusalem. Almost thirty years later, Roger s till refused to giveassistance to the Crusader states during the Second Crusade.

Raymond IV of Toulouse From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Raymond IV of Toulouse (c. 1052-1105, sometimes called Raymond of StGilles, after a town to t he south of Nîmes), was Count of Toulouse,Margrave of Provence, and one of the leaders of th e First Crusade. Hewas a son of Count Pons of Toulouse and Almodis de La Marche, andsucceede d his brother William IV as Count of Toulouse in 1094. According to an Armenian source, he had lost an eye on a pilgrimage toJerusalem before the Fi rst Crusade, but this statement probably refersto the fact that he was one-eyed (monoculus) . He also fought againstthe Moors in Spain before 1096, and he was the first to join thecrusa de after Pope Urban II's sermon at the Council of Clermont. He was married three times, and twice excommunicated for marryingwithin forbidden degrees o f consanguinity. His first wife was hiscousin, and the mother of his son Bertrand. His secon d wife wasMatilda, the daughter of King Roger I of Sicily. Raymond's third wifewas Elvira, th e illegitimate daughter of King Alfonso VI of Castile,the great Spanish king who also campaig ned furiously against theMoors. Raymond was deeply religious, and wished to die in the Holy Land, andso when the call was rai sed for the First Crusade, he was one of thefirst to take the cross. The oldest and the riche st of the crusaders,Raymond left Toulouse at the end of October 1096, with a large companytha t included his wife Elvira, his son Bertrand, and Adhemar, bishopof Le Puy, the papal legate . He marched to Dyrrhachium, and then eastto Constantinople along the same route used by Bohe mund of Taranto. Atthe end of April, 1097, he was the only crusade leader not to swear anoat h of fealty to Byzantine emperor Alexius I - instead he swore anoath of friendship, and offer ed his support against Bohemund, bothRaymond and Alexius' mutual enemy. He was present at the siege of Nicaea and the Battle of Dorylaeum in1097, but his first majo r role came in October of 1097 at the siege ofAntioch. The crusaders heard a rumour that Anti och had been desertedby the Seljuk Turks, so Raymond sent his army ahead to occupy it,offendi ng Bohemund of Taranto who wanted the city for himself. Thecity was, however, still occupied , and was taken by the crusaders onlyafter a difficult siege in June of 1098. Raymond took th e palatiumCassiani (the palace of the emir, Yaghi-Siyan) and the tower over theBridge Gate. H e was ill during the second siege of Antioch byKerbogha, but there was much spiritualistic ac tivity among hisfollowers, which culminated in the discovery of the Holy Lance by amonk name d Peter Bartholomew. The "miracle" raised the morale of the crusaders, and to theirsurprise they were able to rou t Kerbogha outside Antioch. The Lanceitself became a valuable relic among Raymond's followers , despiteAdhemar of Le Puy's skepticism and Bohemund's disbelief and occasionalmockery. Raymo nd also refused to give up his territories in the cityto Bohemund, reminding Bohemund that h e should return to the city toEmperor Alexius, as he had sworn to do. A struggle then arose b etweenRaymond's supporters and the supporters of Bohemund, partly over thegenuineness of th e Lance, but mostly over the possession of Antioch. Many of the minor knights and foot soldiers preferred to continuetheir march to Jerusalem, an d they convinced Raymond to lead themthere in the autumn of 1098. Raymond led them out to bes iege Ma'arratal-Numan, although he left a small detachment of his troops inAntioch, where Boh emund also remained. As Adhemar had died in Antioch,Raymond, along with the prestige given t o him by the Holy Lance,became the new leader of the crusade, but Bohemund expelled hisdetach ment from Antioch in January of 1099. Raymond then began tosearch for a city of his own. He m arched from Ma'arrat, which had beencaptured in December of 1098, into the emirate of Tripoli , and beganthe siege of Arqa on February 14, 1099, apparently with the intent offounding an i ndependent territory in Tripoli that could limit thepower of Bohemund to expand the Principal ity of Antioch to the south. The siege of Arqa, a town outside Tripoli, lasted longer than Raymondhad hoped. Although he s uccessfully captured Hisn al-Akrad, a fortressthat would later become the important Krak de s Chevaliers, hisinsistence on taking Tripoli delayed the march to Jerusalem, and helost muc h of the support he had gained after Antioch. Raymond finallyagreed to continue the march t o Jerusalem on May 13, and after monthsof siege the city was captured on July 15. Raymond wa s offered thecrown of the new Kingdom of Jerusalem, but refused, as he wasreluctant to rule i n the city in which Jesus had suffered. He saidthat he shuddered to think of being called "Ki ng of Jerusalem". It isalso likely that he wished to continue the siege of Tripoli rathertha n remain in Jerusalem. However, he was also reluctant to give upthe Tower of David in Jerusal em, which he had taken after the fall ofthe city, and it was only with difficulty that Godfre y of Bouillon wasable to take it from him. Raymond participated in the battle of Ascalon soon after the captureof Jerusalem, during whic h an invading army from Egypt was defeated.However, Raymond wanted to occupy Ascalon himsel f rather than give itto Godfrey, and in the resulting dispute Ascalon remained unoccupied.I t was not taken by the crusaders until 1153. Godfrey also blamed himfor the failure of his ar my to capture Arsuf. When Raymond went north,in the winter of 1099-1100, his first act was on e of hostility againstBohemund, capturing Laodicea from (Bohemund had himself recently takeni t from Alexius). From Laodicea he went to Constantinople, where heallied with Alexius I, Bohe mund's most powerful enemy. Bohemund was atthe time attempting to expand Antioch into Byzanti ne territory, andblatantly refused to fulfill his oath to the Byzantine Empire. Raymond joining the minor and ultimately unsuccessful crusade of 1101,which was defeated at H eraclea in Anatolia. Raymond escaped andreturned to Constantinople. In 1102 he travelled by s ea fromConstantinople to Antioch, where he was imprisoned by Tancred, regentof Antioch durin g the captivity of Bohemund, and was only dismissedafter promising not to attempt any conques ts in the country betweenAntioch and Acre. He immediately broke his promise, attacking andcap turing Tortosa, and began to build a castle on the Mons Peregrinus("Pilgrim's Mountain") whic h would help in his siege of Tripoli. Hewas aided by Alexius I, who preferred a friendly stat e in Tripoli tobalance the hostile state in Antioch. Raymond died in 1105, before Tripoli was captured. He was succeeded byhis nephew William-Jord an, who, in 1109, with the aid of King BaldwinI of Jerusalem, finally captured the town and e stablished the Countyof Tripoli. William was deposed in the same year by Raymond's eldestso n Bertrand, and the county remained in the possession of the countsof Toulouse throughout th e 12th century. Raymond of Toulouse seems to have driven both by religious andmaterial motives. On the one ha nd he accepted the discovery of theHoly Lance and rejected the kingship of Jerusalem, but o n the otherhand he could not resist the temptation of a new territory. Raymond ofAguilers , a clerk in Raymond's army, wrote an account of the crusadefrom Raymond's point of view.
