SOURCE: Kent Co., England The surname "Pickett" is a very ancient one, its roots going back nearly900 years. It is some what unusual in that it is unrelated to anyoccupation, but is rather patronymic, coming fro m the personal name ofthe father of the original bearer. "Pickett" thus literally signifies"T he son of [or the descendant of] Picket". The personal name itself is avariant of "Picot", it self a deminutive of the Old French personal name"Pic", introduced to England following the N orman Conquest of 1066. That "Picot" was a personal name is verified by the Domesday Book oftwenty years later, in wh ich one "Picot" appears as a chief tenant inHampshire. The same reference identifies a "Pico t de Grentebrig". It isalso interesting to note that two families in Cheshire, the "Pigots" a ndthe "Pichots", lived side by side for generations, and both are believedto spring from th e one common ancestor, "Gilbert Pichot", Lord of Braxton[Earwaker's East Cheshire, ii, 361]. Another early reference to the name is a "Robert filius Picot" in the RedBook of the Excheque r for Yorkshire in 1186. The "filius" here, meaning"son of" again testifies to the surname' s patronymic origins. There is a"Walter Piket" in the Berkshire Pipe Rolls of 1177, while a " GodfreyPiket" appears as a resident of Somerset in the Court Rolls of EdwardIII. Today in England the surname is chiefly associated with Wiltshire. As weshall see, it was als o among the first names to become established in theNew World NAME: French version, Picot, Pighots, Pigott, Picket, Pickett, Piggott

My wife has Hoyte ancestors, including both of the William Hoyte's mentioned on p280 of the 1 871 Hoyt book . Her great grandmother was Helen Jane Freeman (nee Hoyte b1850 Islington, London). Helen's par ents were William (the son) Hoyte (b c1820 Islington) and Jane Booth (b c1825 St Lukes, Londo n). William's father, his namesake (both Cow Keepers /Dairymen), was born in St Columb Minor , Cornwall in 1788 to George Hoyte (b1753) and Alice Glanvil. George's parents were George Ho yte (b1735) and Jean Edwards. His parents were another George Hoyte (b1689) and Jone Budge. W e believe this George is the son of Roger Hoyte who came from Somerset and settled in Cornwal l. We have not been able to confirm that any of these George Hoyte's lived to the age of 10 2 years. Source: 2 rootschat.com Posted by: geri25 Posted on: Thursday 30 December 10 19:37 UTC (UK) Insert Quote Hello I hav e just begun looking into the Hoyte family from St Columb Minor, my William Hoyte in 1851 Cle rkenwell Middlesex gives his age as 66 born in 1785 in Sower St Molaort, Cornwall, England (h is age is different at each census) I have looked around Cornwall and came to the conclusio n it was St Columb Minor. But the other thing I noticed on the burial parish papers was a Th omas Bonython Hoyte died in 1852 aged 26, in the BMD he is Thomas Hoyte. I think Thomas Bonyt hon Hoyte is the son of William Hoyte from Cornwall. Because they are both cow men or cow kee pers. William Hoyte married in Middlesex 1812 to Mary Baddely and occupation is carpenter the n he becomes a cowman dairyman etc. There are gaps with the children so am wonder if he wen t back to St Columb Minor and had a few children there then back up to Clerkenwell Middlesex. Jane a reply later states, Thomas Bonython Hoyte was not of this family. . Richard de Clare, 3rd Earl of Clare, was born before 1105. He wascreated Earl of Hertford abo ut 1136 for his miltary services, andbeing one of those who lived by the power of his sword , entered Wales,there planted himself and became lord of vast territories, but wasfinally sla in in a skirmish with a few Welsh noblemen on April 15,1136. He married Alice, daughter of Ra nulph, Earl of Chester, who diedin 1128, and married Lucia, daughter of Algar, Earl of Mercia , son ofLeofric and "Lady Godiva." His lordship died 1139 and was succeeded byhis eldest son , Gilbert, 2nd Earl of Hertford, who died in 1151, andhaving no issue was succeeded by his br other, Roger de Clare, 3rd Earlof Hertford. Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Richard FitzGilbert de Clare. 1st Earl of Hertford (1094?15 April1136) was the son of Gilber t Fitz Richard de Clare and Alice (Adeliza)de Claremont. He founded the priory of Tonbridge. Richard held the lordship of Ceredigion in Wales. A Welsh revoltagainst Norman rule had begu n in south Wales, where on 1 January 1136the Welsh won a victory over the local Norman force s between Loughorand Swansea. Richard had been away from his lordship in the early partof th e year. Returning to the borders of Wales in April, he ignoredwarnings of the danger and pres sed on towards Ceredigion with a smallforce. He had not gone far when he was ambushed and kil led by the menof Gwent under Iorwerth ab Owain and his brother Morgan, grandsons ofCaradog a p Gruffydd, in a woody tract called "the ill-way of CoedGrano", near the Abbey of Lanthony, A bergavenny. The news of Richard's death induced Owain Gwynedd, son of Gruffydd apCynan, king of Gwynedd t o invade his lordship. In alliance withGruffydd ap Rhys of Deheubarth he won a crushing victo ry over theNormans at the Battle of Crug Mawr, just outside Cardigan. The town ofCardigan wa s taken and burnt, and Richard's widow, Adelize, tookrefuge in Cardigan Castle. She was rescu ed by Miles of Gloucester wholed an expedition to bring her to safety in England.
