Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com SECOND DYNASTY ... The second name mentioned after Ninetjer in the King-lists, Sened, is not known through any c ontemporary sources. The oldest known sources mentioning this name are dated to the 4th Dynas ty. One of the sources, found in the tomb of a man named Sheri, refers to a mortuary cult fo r Sened at Saqqara. The same source also suggests a connection between Sened's cult and tha t of Peribsen, a king of the 2nd Dynasty who is only attested in the south of Egypt. This i s taken as an indication that Sened and Peribsen either were the same person, or that they ea ch ruled a part of the country at the same time and that the division of Egypt at that time w as one of peaceful co-existence. Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com SHEPSESKARE Little to nothing is known about Shepseskare, except that he ruled between Neferirkare and Ne ferefre. His relationship to the other kings of the 5th Dynasty is not known. According to th e Turin King-list, he ruled for 7 years. Some seal impressions dated to his reign have been f ound at Abusir, and these are about the only witnesses of Shepseskare's reign. It is not know n whether he built a pyramid or a solar-temple, although the unfinished pyramid located at Ab usir between the pyramid of Sahure and the solar-temple of Userkaf, has, by some, been credit ed to him. (http://www.ancient-egypt.org/kings/0504_shepseskare/history.html) SEHPSEKARE Sisiris King Shepseskare is a shadowy figure that so far never has been found portrayed in reliefs o r sculptures. If he was the son or brother to his predecessor Nefererkare, we don't know toda y (year 2002). The Royal Canon of Turin notes him for a reign of seven years. At Abusir sea l impressions dated to his reign have been found. It is not known if he built a solar-temple , but old hieroglyphic text tell that six such shrines were built and only two have been foun d. Remains of an unfinished pyramid (not excavated) located at Abusir north of the pyramid o f Sahure, can possibly be credited to Shepseskare. Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com Niuserre Izi 2416-2392 B.C. Izi (Niuserre) was the sixth king of the Dyn. V. He ruled Ancient Egypt from 2416 till 23 92 BC, and is famous for both his solar temple at Abu Gorab and his pyramid at Abu Sir. The r eliefs in the burial chamber of his pyramid describe his military campaigns against Libyan ri vals in the Western Desert and against the Asiatics in Sinai. He left an inscription at Wadi Maghara which served as a guide to the mineral mines of th e region. His two wives, Reputneb and Khentikus, were buried near him at Abu Sir. (http://www.sis.gov.eg/rulers/html/en05p.htm) NIUSERRE Niuserre was the second son of Neferirkare and Khentkaus II to have ascended to the throne. H e was married to a woman named Reput-Nebu, of whom a statue was discovered in the valley-temp le connected to his and Neferirkare's pyramid complex. It is not known whether he had any chi ldren (that out-lived him). The Turin King-list is somewhat damaged at the point where Niuserre's name is mentioned, an d only allows us to state that he ruled for more than 10 years. The 44 years credited to hi m by Manetho is considered unreliable. The representation of a Sed-festival found in his sola r-temple may indicate that he ruled at least for 30 years. An inscription found in the Sinai shown Niuserre triumphant over his enemies. It is debatabl e whether this inscription refers to an actual victory of Niuserre, or whether it was merel y symbolic. It does, however, show that Niuserre was active in the Sinai. He built a solar-temple, named Shesepu-ib-re, in Abu Gurab, a kilometre or more to the Nort h of Abusir. Not only is this the biggest and most complete solar-temple, it is also the onl y one that was constructed completely of stone. The many finely carved reliefs that remain sh ow the king during a Sed-festival and the world as created by the solar god, with representat ions of the seasons and the provinces of Egypt. With the reign of Niuserre, the solar-cult ap pears to have come to its summit. The pyramid-complex of Niuserre is located at Abusir, between the pyramids of Sahure and Nefe rirkare. In stead of building his own valley temple, he had his pyramid complex connected t o the valley temple of Neferirkare. (http://www.ancient-egypt.org/kings/0506_niuserre/history.html)

Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com Menkauhor 2396-2388 B.C. Menkauhor was the seventh king of the 5th Dynasty. He ruled Ancient Egypt from 2396 til l 2388 BC, but never achieved the level of fame that the rest of the kings in his dynasty did . He built a pyramid in Dahshur, but only its ruins remain. There is a small alabaster statue of Menkauhor located in the Egyptian museum in Cairo. H e is reputed as having sent his troops to Sinai in order to acquire materials for the constru ction of his tomb. (http://www.sis.gov.eg/rulers/html/en05p.htm) MENKAUHOR The relationship of Menkauhor with his predecessors or successors is not known. According t o the Turin King-list he ruled for some 8 years. His reign is attested by an inscription in t he Sinai and a seal from Abusir. His solar-temple, called Akhet-Re, and his pyramid are menti oned in texts from private tombs, but have not yet been identified. If the assumption that hi s pyramid is to be located at Dashur is correct, this would imply a departure from Abusir. (http://www.ancient-egypt.org/kings/0507_menkauhor/history.html)

Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com Djedkare Izezi 2388-2356 B.C. Izezi was the eighth king of the 5th Dynasty and ruled Egypt from 2388 till 2356 BC. He w as a very smart and energetic king, and he was able to take full advantage of all the availab le mineral resources in Egypt at Wadi Hammamat and Sinai. His name was inscribed at Wadi Magh ara and Wadi Halfa. His heir was his son, Prince Remkuy, who died before he assumed the thron e (http://www.sis.gov.eg/rulers/html/en05p.htm) DJEDKARE The relationship of Djedkare with his predecessors or successors is not known. According to t he Turin King-list he ruled for 28 years, although some Egyptologists would prefer to read th e number given as 38. Manetho records 44 years for this king. Djedkare's name has been found in the Sinai, demonstrating a continued Egyptian interest in t his rich region, Abydos and Nubia. His reign is marked by some important changes: the solar c ult, although not abandoned, loses some of its importance and predominance, and the power o f the central government is weakened to the advantage of the provincial administration. Another important change that occurred during Djedkare's reign is the return to Saqqara a s a burial place. This does not mean, however, that the funerary temples of Abusir were aband oned. The larger part of the papyri found in the funerary temple of Neferirkare are dated t o Djedkare. (http://www.ancient-egypt.org/kings/0508_djedkare/history.html)

Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com WENIS 2356-2323 B.C. Wenis was the ninth king of the 5th Dynasty. He ruled Egypt from 2356 till 2323 BC. Durin g his reign, successful trade expeditions were conducted with neighboring nations. An inscription raised at Elephantine shows a giraffe that was brought to Egypt with othe r exotic animals for ancient Egyptians, during Wenis' reign. Another drawing found on a disco vered vase shows battle scenes during his reign. There was a major famine during this time. Wenis had two wives, Queen Nebet, who was the mother of Prince Wenisakh, and Queen Khenut . The king was buried in Saqqara in a marvelous tomb with walls covered with the "Pyramid Tex ts". (http://www.sis.gov.eg/rulers/html/en05p.htm) UNAS The relationship of Unas with his predecessors or successors is not known. He was married t o Khenut and to Nebit, but their relationship to Unas' predecessors is not known either, no r are the names of any children that he would have had with them. It has sometimes been propo sed, though, that Iput I was a daughter of Unas. Both of Unas' Queens were buried in mastaba tombs outside of Unas' pyramid complex, which, i n itself is unusual since often in this period the Queens would be buried in smaller pyramid s near their husband's. According to the Turin King-list, Unas ruled for 30 years, or perhaps slightly more of part o f the number is in the lacuna, which is confirmed by Manetho, who recorded 33 years. Despite his long reign, not much is known about Unas. His name has been found in Elephantine , at the Southern border of Egypt (Aswan), and also on an alabaster vessel found in Byblos, t he latter perhaps indicating some commercial or diplomatic activities between Egypt and the N ear East during this period. He seems not to have left any apparent heirs after his death, wh ich may have resulted in some political instability following his death. Unas is mostly known from his pyramid complex, which he built to the North-west of Djoser's a t Saqqara. It is the oldest known royal tomb to have contained religious texts, the so-calle d Pyramid Texts, which are a collection of spells, litanies, hymns and descriptions of the Ki ng's life after death. These texts are the oldest known religious writings known to mankind

Unas was adored in the Saqqara region for many centuries after his death. (http://www.ancient-egypt.org/kings/0508_djedkare/history.html)
