NEW KINGDOM The New Kingdom (1550–1077 BC) is the period covering the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentie th dynasty of Egypt, from the 16th to the 11th century BC, between the Second Intermediate Pe riod, and the Third Intermediate Period. . Through military dominance abroad, the New Kingdom saw Egypt's greatest territorial extent. I t expanded far into Nubia in the south, and held wide territories in the Near East. Egyptia n armies fought with Hittite armies for control of modern-day Syria. . Two of the best known pharaohs of the New Kingdom are Akhenaten, also known as Amenhotep IV , whose exclusive worship of the Aten is often interpreted as the first instance of monotheis m, and Ramesses II, who attempted to recover the territories in modern Israel/Palestine, Leba non and Syria that had been held in the Eighteenth Dynasty. His reconquest led to the Battl e of Qadesh, where he led the Egyptian armies against the army of the Hittite king Muwatall i II.. Manetho lists the kin gs of this Dynasty as being from Bubastis which is located in the eastern delta. The Libyan e lement is evident in the founder, Sheshonq I, who inaugurated the sequence of Libyan Chiefs w hich ruled Egypt for the next 200 years. Sheshonq himself allied by marriage as the son-in-la w of his predecessor Pseusennes II, had the strength of the military behind him as the comman der-in-chief of all the armies of Egypt. Sheshonq was a strong ruler who brought the divide d factions of Thebes and Tanis together into a once more united Egypt. Following the death of Solomon in 930 B.C.E., the kingdom of Judah and Israel began to b e ruled by Rehoboam, Solomon's son, and Jeroboam I afterward. This governmental reign was pri me for Egyptian military intervention. In 925 B.C.E., in a highly successful campaign, the li ke of which had not been seen since the days of Ramesses III in the 20th Dynasty, they were d efeated. He moved first against Judah, arriving before the walls of Jerusalem, held by Rehobo am. The city was surrounded but Sheshonq was bought off from entering it by being given the t reasures of the House of the Lord and the treasures of the kings house. All of Solomon's trea sures, except the most sacred and emotive Ark of the Covenant, fell to Sheshonq. Pharaoh the n turned his attentions to Israel, pursuing his earlier protégé Jeroboam, who fled over the J ordan River. Finally, Sheshonq halted at Megiddo, the scene of Tuthmosis III's victory 500 ye ars before, and erected a victory Stele in the manner of his predecessors. Osokon I, who succeeded his father, continued to provide strong patronage for the variou s leading priesthoods, thereby consolidating his position as well as maintaining a continuou s building program, especially at his native city of Bubastis. The chief priesthood of Amun a t Karnak was taken from his brother Input and given to one of his sons, Sheshonq(II) whom h e took as a co-regent in 890 B.C.E. Sheshonq, however, died a few months earlier than his fat her, and both were buried at Tanis. The successor was Takelot I, another son of Osokon by a minor wife. This reign, althoug h 15 years in length, has left no major monuments, but saw the beginning of the fragmentatio n of Egypt once more into two power bases. Osokon II succeeded Takelot I as pharaoh in 874 B.C.E. at much the same time that his cou sin Harsiese succeeded his father (Sheshonq III) as High Priest of Amun at Karnak. Problems a rose in year 4 of Osokon II when Harsiese declared himself king in the South. Although he wa s only king in name, when Harsiese died Osokon II consolidated his own position by appointin g one of his sons, Nimlot, as High Priest at Karnak and another son, Sheshonq, as High Pries t of Ptah at Memphis. Osokon II thereby had the two major priesthoods of Egypt in his familie s grasp as a political more rather than from any religious motivation. Takelot II succeeded his father Osorkon II in 850 and maintained stability in the South w here his half brother Nimlot had consolidated his position by extending North to Herakleopoli s and placing his son Ptahwedjankhef in charge there. Nimlot then married his daughter Karoma ma II to Takelot II, thereby cementing a bond between North and South and becoming the father -in-law of his half brother. The Crown Prince, Osorkon, never succeeded to the throne because his younger brother Shes honq moved to seize power, proclaiming himself pharaoh as Sheshonq III with a reign of 53 yea rs. Harsiese reappeared as Chief High Priest of Amun, apparently without too much commotion a t Thebes because Sheshonq had let the Thebans have their own way and choice. Nubians invaded Lower Egypt and took the throne of Egypt under Piye although they already con trolled Thebes and Upper Egypt in the early years of Piye's reign. Piye's conquest of Lower E gypt established the Twenty-fifth Dynasty which ruled until 656 BC. . Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com ZECHARIAH Zechariah = "Jehovah remembers" (zek-ar-yaw') 7. son of the high priest Jehoiada, in the reign of Joash king of Judah, who was stoned in th e court of the temple ZECHARIAH 10. High priest, and son or grandson of Jehoiada Put to death for prophesying against Jerusalem -- 2 Chronicles 24:20-22,25; Matthew 23:35; Lu ke 11:51 (see Prophet Zechariah, who was more likely the stonee -- lmg) ZECHARIAH Jehovah is renowned or remembered. 2. The son or grandson of Jehoiada, the high priest in the times of Ahaziah and Joash. Afte r the death of Jehoiada he boldly condemned both the king and the people for their rebellio n against God (2 Chronicles 24:20), which so stirred up their resentment against him that a t the king's commandment they stoned him with stones, and he died "in the court of the hous e of the Lord" (24:21). Christ alludes to this deed of murder in Matthew 23:35, Luke 11:51. ( See ZACHARIAS [2].) (see also, Prophet Zechariah, who was probably the real stonee. --lmg) ZECHARIAH 6. Son of the high priest Jehoiada, in the reign of Joash king of Judah (2 Chronicles 24:20 ) and therefore the king's cousin. After the death of Jehoiada, Zechariah probably succeede d to his office, and in attempting to check the reaction in favor of idolatry which immediate ly followed he fell a victim to a conspiracy formed against him by the king, and was stoned i n the court of the temple. He is probably the same as the "Zacharias son of Barachias" who wa s slain between the temple and the altar. (Matthew 23:35) [ZACHARIAS, No. 2] (B.C. 838.) ZECHARIAH (1) zek-a-ri'-a (zekharyahu, or zekharyah; the Septuagint Zacharia(s)): A very common name in the Old Testament. The form, especially the longer form, of the name wo uld suggest for its meaning, "Yah remembers" or "Yah is renowned," and the name was doubtles s understood in this sense in later times. But the analogies with ZACCUR, ZECHER, ZICHRI (whi ch see), etc., make some original ethnic derivation probable. (19) A son of Jehoiada, at the time of Joash. He rebuked the people publicly for their aposta sy, and was stoned by them, Joash consenting to their act (2 Chronicles 24:20-22). As 2 Chron icles is the last book in the Hebrew Old Testament, Zechariah was regarded as the last of th e Old Testament martyrs, and hence, is coupled with Abel (the first martyr) in Matthew 23:3 5 parallel Luke 11:51. The words "son of Barachiah" in Matthew are due to confusing this Zech ariah with the prophet. See ZACHARIAH. Excerpts from Jerusalem EasyWalks ...Now take the steps that lead you into the Valley of Kidr on... Your first stop is at Zechariah's Tomb, the only pyramid-topped structure in the valley. Carv ed out of the slope's hard rock, and completely detached from the mountainside, it is over 1 0 meters high and dates back to the end of the Second Temple period. Pillars are cut into th e stone all around the sides of the cube. A great wrong was done to Zechariah, who predicted the downfall of Jerusalem and was execute d by the King of Judah for his efforts. "Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Je hoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, "This is what God says: 'Why do you d isobey the Lord's commands? You will not prosper. Because you have forsaken the Lord, he ha s forsaken you.'" But they plotted against him, and by order of the king they stoned him to d eath in the courtyard of the Lord's temple." [2 Chronicles 24: 20-21]. Jews so revered Zechariah that over the centuries they asked to be buried as close as possibl e to his grave. At one time the Jews of Jerusalem offered eulogies here and would come to Zec hariah's tomb to mourn the destruction of the Temple on the ninth day of the Hebrew month o f Av. (http://info.jpost.com/2000/Supplements/Millennium/tour1.html) When a Navi is called by his name and his fathers' name it is a sign that the father is als o a navi. Azriah Ben Oded, Yehu Ben Hanani, Zechariah Ben Yehoyada are given as examples. (http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/Judaism/The_List_of_Prophets.html)
