Though his pyramid at Giza was sma ller than those of Khufu and Khephren, The Pyramid of Menkaure was covered with costly Aswa n granite. His basalt sarcophagus was covered with fine decorations. His queen was Khamererne bty. MYKERINOS Mykerinos was the son of Khefren and Khamernebti I. He was married to his sister, Khamernebt i II, with whom he had a son, Khunre, who died at young age. He probably had two other wives, but their names are not known. One of these wives bore hi m a son, Shepseskaf, his successor, and another bore him a daughter, Khentkaus, who would lat er marry Userkaf, the first king of the 5th Dynasty. According to the Turin King-list, his rule lasted for 18 or 28 years. The Turin King-list als o places another king between Khefren and Mykerinos, with an unknown number of years. This ki ng may be the otherwise unattested Bakare (2494-2490), who may have been yet another son of K heops’. Contrary to Kheops and Khefren, Mykerinos was later seen as a benevolent and wise king. Thi s may have been caused by the fact that his pyramid, built next to the pyramids of Kheops an d Khefren, was slightly less than half the size of these two great pyramids. The mortuary tem ple built in front of his pyramid was completed, be it somewhat hastily, by his successor She pseskaf. Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com Shepseskaf 2472 to 2467 B.C. Shepseskaf was the sixth king of the 4th Dynasty. He ruled ancient Egypt from 2472 BC until 2 467 BC. Shepseskaf was in power through a very difficult political period, during which ther e were many confrentations with various priests. Many Nomes desired independence and rebelled against Shepseskaf's authority. He completed hi s predecessors' monuments, but some records indicate that he was not descended from a royal l ine. His tomb is in South Saqqara. SHEPSESKAF Mykerinos was succeeded by his oldest surviving son, Shepseskaf. His wife, Bunefer; bore hi m a daughter, Khamaat, who married the Memphite high-priest Ptah-shepses. According to the Turin King-list, his reign lasted for only four years. Again according to th e Turin King-list, his reign was followed by a two year reign of an unknown king, who may b e identified with king Thamphthis (2468-2465) recorded by Manetho. Shepseskaf chose not to have a pyramid, but a sarcophagus-like mastaba as a tomb and he move d back to the cemetery of Saqqara. This is seen by some Egyptologists as a sign of shifting b eliefs, by others as a sign that he wanted to distance himself from the building policy of hi s forefathers. Others again see it as proof that the building policy of Kheops and Khefren ha d completely exhausted the resources and wealth of the royal family. He married his sister, Hetepheres II, with whom he f athered several children. A relief found in the mastaba originally prepared for Hetepheres I I but donated by her to her daughter, Meresankh III, identifies Kawab as the father of this M eresankh. It is not certain that Kawab ever has been a crown-prince, despite his title "eldest son of t he king", which may have been purely honorific or an indication that he was a son of Kheops ' most important wife. His high status is shown by his elaborate titulary, one of his most no table titles being that of vizier. He predeceased both his father and his wife. His elaborate mastaba tomb was discovered to th e east of Kheops' pyramid in Giza (Mastaba 7110-7120). A burial chamber built in this mastab a for his wife, Hetepheres II, was left unfinished, as Hetepheres out-lived Kawab by many yea rs and chose another tomb. A posthumous honour was paid to Kawab several centuries after he lived, when prince Khaemwase t, a son of Ramesses II, restored one of his statues in the temple of Memphis. He was also married to Meresankh III, a daughter of Kawa b and Hetepheres II, with whom he had at least four sons: Nebemakhet, Niuserre, Khenterka an d Duaenre, and one daughter, Shepsestkau.
