Notes:

Raymond III of Tripoli From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Raymond III of Tripoli (1140?1187) was Count of Tripoli from 1152 to1187 and Prince of Galile e and Tiberias in right of his wife Eschiva. Early life Raymond of Saint-Gilles was a great-grandson of Raymond IV of Toulouse(Raymond I of Tripoli) . He succeeded his father Raymond II, who hadbeen killed by the Hashshashin, in 1152, when h e was twelve. Hismother, princess Hodierna of Jerusalem, daughter of King Baldwin II,ruled a s regent until Raymond came of age three years later. He wasalso known as Raymond the Younge r to distinguish him from his father. In 1160, Byzantine emperor Manuel Comnenus was seeking a wife from thecrusader states. The tw o candidates presented to him were Raymond'ssister Melisende, and Princess Maria of Antioch . At first, Melisendewas chosen, and Raymond collected an enormous dowry, whilenegotiations c ontinued for over a year. However, Manuel's ambassadorsheard the rumours that Melisende (an d Raymond himself) might have beenfathered by someone other than Raymond II, and the marriag e was calledoff; Manuel married Maria instead. Raymond, feeling slighted for bothhimself an d his sister, responded by hiring pirates and criminals toplunder the Byzantine island of Cyp rus. Melisende later entered aconvent, where she died fairly young. In 1164 Raymond and Bohemund III of Antioch marched out to relieveHarim, which was under sieg e by Nur ad-Din. The crusader army wasdefeated in the ensuing battle on August 12; Raymond, B ohemund,Joscelin III of Edessa, Hugh VIII of Lusignan, and others were takencaptive and impri soned in Aleppo. Raymond remained in prison until1173, when he was ransomed for 80 000 piece s of gold. During hiscaptivity, King Amalric I of Jerusalem ruled as regent of the county,an d dutifully returned it to Raymond once he was released. Regent of Jerusalem In 1174 Amalric died and was succeeded by his son Baldwin IV, who wasstill too young to rul e on his own and furthermore was suffering fromleprosy; Miles of Plancy, seneschal of the kin gdom, claimed theregency, but Raymond soon arrived and demanded to be named bailli, orregent , as the closest male relative of the king (he was a firstcousin of Amalric). In this he wa s supported by the major barons ofthe kingdom, including Humphrey II of Toron, Balian of Ibel in, andReginald of Sidon. Soon Miles was assassinated in Acre and Raymond wasinvested as bail li. Raymond also married Eschiva of Bures, Princess of Galilee and thewidow of Walter of Saint-Om er of Tiberias, which allowed him to gaincontrol over much of the northern part of the Kingdo m of Jerusalem, especially the fortress at Tiberias on the Sea of Galilee. As regent,he appoin ted William of Tyre chancellor of Jerusalem in 1174 andarchbishop of Tyre in 1175. He retire d as bailli when Baldwin IV cameof age in 1176, having arranged for Baldwin IV's sister Sibyl la ofJerusalem to marry William of Montferrat. William died in 1177 whileSibylla was pregnan t with the future Baldwin V. Dynastic factions Amalric I had married twice, to Agnes of Courtenay, now married toReginald of Sidon, and to M aria Comnena, the dowager Queen, who hadmarried Balian of Ibelin in 1177. His daughter by Agn es, Sibylla, wasalready of age, the mother of a son, and was clearly in a strongposition to s ucceed her brother, but Maria's daughter Isabella had thesupport of her stepfather's family , the Ibelins. Raymond's own position amid these tensions was difficult andcontroversial. As the king's near est relative in the male line, he hada strong claim to the throne himself. However, althoug h his wife hadhad several children by her first husband, he had no children of hisown to succ eed him; this seems to have held him back from advancinghimself as king. Instead, he acted a s a power-broker, working closelywith the Ibelins and attempting to influence the marriages o f theprincesses. The king, meanwhile, relied considerably on his mother andher brother, Josce lin III of Edessa, who had no claims of their own toadvance. In 1180, Baldwin had been planning to marry Sibylla to Hugh III ofBurgundy, but had not succe eded. Raymond attempted a coup, and beganto march on Jerusalem with Bohemund III, to force th e king to marryhis sister to a local candidate of his own choosing, probably Baldwinof Ibelin , Balian's older brother. To counter this, the king hastilyarranged her marriage to Guy of Lu signan, younger brother of Amalric, the constable of the kingdom. A foreign match was essentia l to bringthe possibility of external military aid to the kingdom. With the newFrench king Ph ilip II a minor, Guy's status as a vassal of the Kingand Sibylla's first cousin Henry II of E ngland - who owed the Pope apenitential pilgrimage - was useful. Raymond returned home withou tentering the kingdom. By 1182, Baldwin IV, increasingly incapacitated by his leprosy, namedGuy as bailli. Raymond c ontested this, but when Guy fell out of favourwith Baldwin the following year, he was re-appo inted bailli and wasgiven possession of Beirut. Baldwin came to an agreement with Raymondan d the Haute Cour to make Baldwin of Montferrat, Sibylla's son by herfirst marriage, his heir , before Sibylla and Guy. The child wascrowned co-king as Baldwin V in 1183 in a ceremony pre sided byRaymond. It was agreed that, should the boy die during his minority, the regency woul d pass to "the most rightful heirs" until his kinsmen- the Kings of England and France and Fr ederick I, Holy Roman Emperor- and the Pope were able to adjudicate between the claims of Sib yllaand Isabella. These "most rightful heirs" were not named. Reign of Baldwin V Baldwin IV died in spring 1185, and was succeeded by his nephew.Raymond was bailli, but he ha d passed Baldwin V's personalguardianship to Joscelin III of Edessa, his maternal great-uncle ,claiming that he did not wish to attract suspicion if the child, whodoes not seem to have be en robust, were to die. Baldwin V died duringthe summer of 1186, at Acre. His paternal grandf ather William V ofMontferrat and Joscelin escorted his coffin to Jerusalem, but Raymondwas ab sent. Neither side paid any heed to Baldwin IV's will. After the funeral,Joscelin had Sibylla name d as her brother's successor, although shehad to agree to divorce Guy, just as her father ha d divorced hermother, with the guarantee that she would be allowed to choose a newconsort. On ce crowned, she immediately crowned Guy. Meanwhile, Raymondhad gone to Nablus, home of Balia n and Maria, and summoned all thosenobles loyal to Princess Isabella and the Ibelins. Raymon d wantedinstead to have her and her husband Humphrey IV of Toron crowned. However, Humphrey, w hose stepfather Raynald of Chatillon was an allyof Guy, deserted, and swore allegiance to Gu y and Sibylla. Instead ofarguing and possibly causing a civil war, Raymond withdrew to Tripol i. Battle of Hattin and death In Tripoli Raymond made peace with Saladin, perhaps hoping to allywith him against their comm on enemy Guy. At the end of 1186 Saladin, with his army stationed at Raymond's fief of Tiberia s, threatened aninvasion of the kingdom when Raynald continued to attack Muslimcaravans. An e mbassy, led by Balian of Ibelin, was sent by Guy tonegotiate with Raymond, but Saladin?s troo ps ambushed them at theBattle of Cresson in May of 1187. Raymond reluctantly made peace withG uy after this, and Saladin immediately besieged Tiberias, rather thanpillage the kingdom as t he Crusaders expected. Raymond and Guycombined their forces at Acre but could not agree o n a plan of action;Raymond preferred not to meet Saladin in a pitched battle, even thoughRaym ond's wife Eschiva was still in Tiberias. Guy did not agree, andinstead the Crusaders marche d into a waterless plain, were surroundedby Saladin's army, and were almost completely destro yed at the Battleof Hattin outside Tiberias. Raymond led the vanguard, but five ofRaymond's o wn knights defected to Saladin's side and told him of thedisagreements in the crusader army . The vanguard was surrounded andRaymond led two unsuccessful cavalry charges. The Muslim tro opsallowed him to pass through in the second charge, and, cut off fromthe main army, he fled . He was one of the few to escape. Raymond and the other survivors regrouped in Tyre. He then returned toTripoli, probably in Au gust. He died there in September or October, ofpleurisy. He had appointed as his successor hi s godson Raymond ofAntioch, although this Raymond's father Bohemund III of Antiochinstalled h is younger son Bohemund IV as count. Contemporary descriptions William of Tyre described Raymond as: "...a man of slender build, extremely spare, of medium height andswarthy complexion. His hai r was straight and rather dark in color. Hehad piercing eyes and carried his shoulders very e rect. He was promptand vigorous in action, gifted with equanimity and foresight, andtemperat e in his use of both food and drink, far more than the averageman. He showed munificence towa rds strangers, but towards his ownpeople he was not so lavish. He was fairly well-lettered, a naccomplishment which he had acquired while a prisoner among the enemy,at the expense of muc h effort, aided greatly, however, by his naturalkeenness of mind. Like King [Amalric I], he e agerly sought theknowledge contained in written works. He was indefatigable in askingquestion s if there happened to be anyone present who in his opinionwas capable of answering." Among Muslim authors, Ibn al-Athir remarked that "Among the Franj ofthat time, there was no w iser or more courageous man than the lord ofTripoli." Ibn Jubair stated that he had "remarkab le intelligence andastuteness." Regarding his marriage to the widow Eschiva of Bures, William of Tyrewrote that he "loved he r and her children as tenderly as though shehad borne them all to him." Raymond and Eschiva h ad no children oftheir own. Raymond in fiction and film Raymond appears in a number of novels set in Outremer. He receivessympathetic treatment by Gr aham Shelby in The Knights of Dark Renown(1969). The children's book Knight Crusader (1954) b y Ronald Welch isslightly ambivalent, while Susan Peek's Crusader King (2004), aproselytisin g children's novel about Baldwin IV, is downright hostiletowards him, depicting him as the st ereotypical 'wicked uncle',plotting against Baldwin, and in Saladin's pay. A largely fictionalised version of Raymond, renamed the Count ofTiberias in order to avoid fi rst-name confusion with Raynald andterritorial confusion with Tripoli in Libya, is played b y Jeremy Ironsin the 2005 movie Kingdom of Heaven, scripted by William Monahan. TheCounty o f Tripoli plays no role in the movie and Raymond/Tiberias issimply 'Marshall' (sic) of Jerusa lem, which was in reality a very lowposition in the kingdom. Irons is a good physical match w ith Williamof Tyre's description. An earlier draft of the script did mentionRaymond by firs t name, and included his speech before Hattin beggingthe king not to go to the relief of Tibe rias, although it was beingheld by his wife. His disputes with Raynald, Guy, and the so-calle d"court party" are depicted broadly in accordance with thehistoriographical tradition of M. W . Baldwin and Steven Runciman:Monahan seems to have been unaware of more recent scholarship.H owever, he is depicted as not taking part in the battle of Hattin, and leaves the kingdom wit h the intention of retiring to Cyprus, rather than returning home to die.

Abelard of Hauteville From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Abelard of Hauteville[1] (c.1044 ? 1081) was the eldest son ofHumphrey, count of Apulia and C alabria (1051 ? 1057), and his Lombardwife, Gaitelgrima of Salerno, also known as Altrude. H e was supposedto inherit his father's lands, but Robert Guiscard, his uncle andguardian, wh o was elected count on Humphrey's death, confiscated them. In April 1064, Abelard joined three discontented barons (Geoffrey I ofConversano; Joscelin, L ord of Molfetta; and Robert, Count ofMontescaglioso) in rebellion against Robert, who had jus t left forSicily. They received the aid, financial and military, of Perenos, theByzantine duk e of Durazzo, and held out for several years, neithermaking headway against Robert nor he aga inst them. On 1 January 1068,Romanus Diogenes was acclaimed emperor in Constantinople and the Greeks transferred their military attention to the Seljuk threat totheir east. The rebellio n fell apart and by February only Geoffreyremained. Abelard was exiled, but Robert forgave hi m and gave himcities. Abelard was again at the head of a revolt later in December 1071.Then, he recruited not onl y the Byzantines, but his brother Herman, whose inheritance had also been confiscated by his g uardian Guiscardat the same time, and the lords of Giovinazzo and Trani. To their aidcame th e prince of Capua, Richard Drengot, and the prince of Salerno,Gisulf II, both of whom feare d the ascendancy of Robert Guiscard.Robert, however, did not leave the siege of Palermo. He p referred toignore the insurrection, then spreading to Calabria, in favour ofspeeding up event s in Sicily. Palermo fell in 1072 and Robert returned to the peninsula the nextyear, easily putting down m ost of the rebels. However, he fell ill atTrani and was taken to Bari, where Sichelgaita, hi s wife, had thebarons proclaim her son Roger Borsa his heir. Abelard was the onlybaron to dis sent from the election of Roger, claiming that he was therightful heir to the duchy. He rebel led yet again in 1078, withGeoffrey and Peter of Trani again, and with the support of Jordan, Prince of Capua, Richard's son. A separate peace was made with Jordanand the rebellion, whic h was originally very well-organised, fellapart in 1079. Abelard was exiled in 1080. He trave lled toConstantinople with his brother, where he was welcomed cordially bythe Emperor Alexiu s I Comnenus. He died, perhaps assassinated, probably in Illyria, in 1081, around April. He wa s buried in Greeceand never brought back to Venosa, where most of his family lies tothis day.

Guy, Duke of Amalfi From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Guy of Hauteville (French: Gui de Hauteville, Italian: Guidod'Altavilla, Latin: Gidus) (c.106 1?July 8, 1108) was the second son ofRobert Guiscard and his second wife, Sichelgaita. He wa s created dukeof Amalfi sometime after the conquest of that city in 1073. According to Anna Comnena, Guy took part in his father's Balkanexpeditions of 1084?1085. Th e Byzantine chronicler says also that theEmperor Alexius I Comnenus offered Guy a profitabl e marriage, highoffice, and a great sum of money, but Guy did not accept immediately. This ha s been doubted by some modern historians, who see no evidenceof infidelity towards his father . After distinguishing himself in service to his eldest half-brother,Bohemond, and his father' s death, Guy did join the emperor's court. In1098, Guy travelled with the emperor to the resc ue of the Crusadersbesieging Antioch. Stephen II, Count of Blois, however, told theemperor t o turn around for the Franks were surely annihilated and theemperor, with the Turks at his do or, happily did. Guy was the soledissenting voice in his council, perhaps because Bohemond wa s at thesiege.
