He did not return to Trans-Jordan (Palestine) pro bably because most of the Jewish population had already been re-settled in Babylonia; too, th e old capital city of Jerusalem laid in ruins, and his old kingdom, now a Babylonian province , was then under Babylonian military-rule. He later moved his residence to Nehardea, a smal l town on the Euphrates with a large Jewish community, where, since the Temple at Jerusalem h ad been destroyed, he built the first synagogue, which was called “Shaf ve-Yativ”, which mean s “the Divine Presence is remove and is settle in this place”, which the author of the “Sede r Olam Zutta”, a medieval Jewish chronicle, regarded as the origin of the Babylonian “Exilarc hate”, the office of the “exilarch”, who bore the title “resh-galuta” meaning “exiled-king” , who claimed lordship over the Jewish “Diaspora”. Spouse: ? Children: ? QUICK SKETCH Jehoiachin succeeded his unfortunate father, and reigned for only three months. He, of course , followed his fathers footsteps, as he had little time to put changes into effect. Nebuchadn ezzar apparently viewed him and his house as a threat, as he had his generals arrest the youn g king, and carry him and his entire coterie of relatives and servants into captivity in Baby lon. The Bible has his age at either eight or eighteen when he was imprisoned, where he remai ned for 38 years. After the death of Nebuchadnezzar, Amel-Marduk ascended the throne of Babyl on and released Jehoiachin from prison. He gave him an allowance on which to live and Jehoiac hin apparently died while still living in Babylon. The LOR D had harsh words for Jehoiachin, saying, "‘As surely as I live,’ declares the LORD, ‘even i f you, Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim were a signet ring on my right hand, I would still pull yo u off. I will hand you over to those who seek your life, those you fear-to Nebuchadnezzar kin g of Babylon and to the Babylonians…You will never come back to the land you long to return t o,’" (22:24,25,27). Jehoiachin ruled only a few months in 597 B.C. before his faithlessness t oward Nebuchadnezzar led to deportation. There is a two-fold happy ending to the story of Jehoiachin, however. Chapter 52 tells how af ter 37 years of exile and a change of power in Babylon to Evil-Merodach, Jehoiachin was relea sed from prison and was treated with honor, eating at the king’s table and receiving a regula r allowance until he died (vv. 31-34). But the other happy ending occurs 600 years later. I n his genealogy of Jesus, Matthew records one Jeconiah who was the father of Shealtiel (1:11) . The genealogical lists of I Chronicles identify Jeconiah as Jehoiachin, father of Shealtie l (3:17). So the LORD showed this evil king tremendous mercy and blessing, and made him an an cestor of the Savior. [It is interesting in connection with these blessings to note the word s of the LORD concerning Jehoiachin. Jer. 22:30: "Record this man as childless, a man who wil l not prosper in his lifetime, for none of his offspring will prosper, none will sit on the t hrone of David or rule anymore in Judah." He is also called Jeconiah (Jeremiah 24:1; 27:20, etc.), an d Coniah (22:24; 37:1). He was succeeded by his uncle, Mattaniah = Zedekiah (q.v.). He was th e last direct heir to the Jewish crown. He was carried captive to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar , along with the flower of the nobility, all the leading men in Jerusalem, and a great body o f the general population, some thirteen thousand in all (2 Kings 24:12-16; Jeremiah 52:28). A fter an imprisonment of thirty-seven years (Jeremiah 52:31,33), he was liberated by Evil-mero dach, and permitted to occupy a place in the king's household and sit at his table, receivin g "every day a portion until the day of his death, all the days of his life" (52:32-34). Jeho-i’achin (whom Jehovah has appointed ), son of Jehoiakim, and for three months and ten days king of Ju dah. (B.C. 597.) At his accession Jerusalem was quite defenseless, and unable to offer any re sistance to the army which Nebuchadnezzar sent to besiege it. (2 Kings 24:10,11) In a very sh ort time Jehoiachin surrendered at discretion; and he, and the queen-mother, and all his serv ants, captains and officers, came out and gave themselves up to Nebuchadnezzar, who carried t hem, with the harem and the eunuchs, to Babylon. (Jeremiah 29:2; Ezekiel 17:12; 19:9) There h e remained a prisoner, actually in prison and wearing prison garments, for thirty-six years , viz., till the death of Nebuchadnezzar, when Evilmerodach, succeeding to the throne of Baby lon, brought him out of prison, and made him sit at this own table. JEHOIACHIN - je-hoi'-a-kin (yehoyakhin, "Yahweh will uphold"; called also "Jeconiah" in 1 Chronicles 3:16 ; Jeremiah 24:1; yekhonyah, "Yahweh will be steadfast," and "Coniah" in Jeremiah 22:24,28; ko nyahu, "Yahweh has upheld him"; 'Ioakeim): A king of Judah; son and successor of Jehoiakim; reigned three months and surrendered to Nebu chadnezzar; was carried to Babylon, where, after being there 37 years a prisoner, he died. 1. Sources: The story of his reign is told in 2 Kings 24:8-16, and more briefly in 2 Chronicles 36:9-10 . Then, after the reign of his successor Zedekiah and the final deportation are narrated, th e account of his release from prison 37 years afterward and the honor done him is given as th e final paragraph of 2Ki (25:27-30). The same thing is told at the end of the Book of Jer (52 :31-34). Neither for this reign nor for the succeeding is there the usual reference to stat e annals; these seem to have been discontinued after Jehoiakim. In Jeremiah 22:24-30 there i s a final pronouncement on this king, not so much upon the man as upon his inevitable fate, a nd a prediction that no descendant of his shall ever have prosperous rule in Judah. 2. His Reign: Of the brief reign of Jehoiachin there is little to tell. It was rather a historic landmark t han a reign; but its year, 597 BC, was important as the date of the first deportation of Jewi sh captives to Babylon (unless we except the company of hostages carried away in Jehoiakim' s 3rd (4th) year, Daniel 1:1-7). His coming to the throne was just at or near the time when N ebuchadnezzar's servants were besieging Jerusalem; and when the Chaldean king's arrival in pe rson to superintend the siege made apparent the futility of resistance, Jehoiachin surrendere d to him, with all the royal household and the court. He was carried prisoner to Babylon, an d with him ten thousand captives, comprising all the better and sturdier element of the peopl e from prince to craftsman, leaving only the poorer sort to constitute the body of the natio n under his successor Zedekiah. With the prisoners were carried away also the most valuable t reasures of the temple and the royal palace. 3. The Two Elements: Ever since Isaiah fostered the birth and education of a spiritually-minded remnant, for him t he vital hope of Israel, the growth and influence of this element in the nation has been disc ernible, as well in the persecution it has roused (see under MANASSEH), as in its fiber of so und progress. It is as if a sober sanity of reflection were curing the people of their empt y idolatries. The feeling is well expressed in such a passage as Habakkuk 2:18-20. Hitherto , however, the power of this spiritual Israel has been latent, or at best mingled and pervasi ve among the various occupations and interests of the people. The surrender of Jehoiachin bri ngs about a segmentation of Israel on an unheard-of principle: not the high and low in wealth or social position, but the weight and worth of all classes o n the one side, who are marked for deportation, and the refuse element of all classes on th e other, who are left at home. With which element of this strange sifting Jeremiah's propheti c hopes are identified appears in his parable of the Good and Bad Figs (Jeremiah 24), in whic h he predicts spiritual integrity and upbuilding to the captives, and to the home-staying rem ainder, shame and calamity. Later on, he writes to the exiles in Babylon, advising them to ma ke themselves at home and be good citizens (Jeremiah 29:1-10). As for the hapless king, "thi s man Coniah," who is to be their captive chief in a strange land, Jeremiah speaks of him i n a strain in which the stern sense of Yahweh's inexorable purpose is mingled with tender sym pathy as he predicts that this man shall never have a descendant on David's throne (Jeremia h 22:24-30). It is as if he said, All as Yahweh has ordained, but--the pity of it

4. Thirty-seven Years Later: In the first year of Nebuchadnezzar's successor, perhaps by testamentary edict of Nebuchadnez zar himself, a strange thing occurred. Jehoiachin, who seems to have been a kind of hostage p risoner for his people, was released from prison, honored above all the other kings in simila r case, and thenceforth to the end of his life had his portion at the royal table (2 Kings 25 :27-30; Jeremiah 52:31-34). This act of clemency may have been due to some such good influenc e at court as is described in the Book of Daniel; but also it was a tribute to the good condu ct of that better element of the people of which he was hostage and representative. It was th e last event of Judean royalty; and suggestive for the glimpse it seems to afford of a peopl e whom the Second Isaiah could address as redeemed and forgiven, and of a king taken from dur ance and judgment (compare Isaiah 53:8), whose career makes strangely vivid the things that a re said of the mysterious "Servant of Yahweh." Verse 1. (p. 495) (623) "In the third year of the reign of Joacim (Jehoiakim) king of Judah , Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it." Jehoiakim, son of the Jo siah in whose thirteenth regnal year Jeremiah began to prophesy, and under whom the woman Hul da prophesied, was the same man as was called by the other name of Eliakim, and reigned ove r the tribes of Judah and Jerusalem eleven years. His son Jehoiachin [misprinted "Joachim" fo r "Joachin"; cf. IV Reg. 24:6 in the Vulgate] surnamed Jeconiah, followed him in the kingship , and on the tenth day of the third month of his reign he was taken captive by Nebuchadnezzar 's generals and brought to Babylon. In his place his paternal uncle Zedekiah, a son of Josiah , was appointed king, and in his eleventh year Jerusalem was captured and destroyed. Let no o ne therefore imagine that the Jehoiakim in the beginning of Daniel is the same person as th e one who is spelled Jehoiachin [Lat. Joachin] in the commencement of Ezekiel. For the latte r has "-chin" as its final syllable, whereas the former has "-kim." And it is for this reaso n that in the Gospel according to Matthew there seems to be a generation missing, because th e second group of fourteen, (A) extending to the time of Jehoiakim, ends with a son of Josiah , and the third group begins with Jehoiachin, son of Jehoiakim.
