 birt: ABT 0500 BC
plac: Persia (Iran)||Artaxerxes by Plutarch|ARTAXERXES|437-359 B.C.|by Plutarch|translated by John Dryden||ARTAXERXES -|THE first Artaxerxes, among all the kings of Persia the most remarkable for a gentle and nobl|e spirit, was surnamed the Long-handed, his right hand being longer than his left, and was th|e son of Xerxes. The second, whose story I am now writing, who had the surname of the Mindful|, was the grandson of the former, by his daughter Parysatis, who brought Darius four sons, th|e eldest Artaxerxes, the next Cyrus, and two younger than these, Ostanes and Oxathres. Cyru|s took his name of the ancient Cyrus, as he, they say, had his from the sun, which, in the Pe|rsian language, is called Cyrus. Artaxerxes was at first called Arsicas; Dinon says Oarses; b|ut it is utterly improbable that Ctesias (however otherwise he may have filled his books wit|h a perfect farrago of incredible and senseless fables) should be ignorant of the name of th|e king with whom he lived as his physician, attending upon himself, his wife, his mother, an|d his children.||Cyrus, from his earliest youth, showed something of a headstrong and vehement character; Arta|xerxes, on the other side, was gentler in everything, and of a nature more yielding and sof|t in its action. He married a beautiful and virtuous wife, at the desire of his parents, bu|t kept her as expressly against their wishes.|...[MUCH MORE]|(http://www.4literature.net/Plutarch/Artaxerxes/)

Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com Pharnabazus Pharnabazus[färnb´zs] d. after 374 B.C., Persian governor. He had an important satrapy in Asi a Minor under Darius II and Artaxerxes II. He was responsible for the assassination (404 B.C. ) of Alcibiades, and in the same year he supported Artaxerxes in the rebellion of Cyrus the Y ounger. Pharnabazus and his fellow satrap Tissaphernes encouraged the revival of Persian powe r in the Greek world by alternately supporting Sparta and Athens in the Peloponnesian War an d later. Pharnabazus collaborated (394) with Conon in the restoration of the Athenian fleet . He was in command of two unsuccessful Persian invasions of Egypt (385, 374). (http://www.1upinfo.com/encyclopedia/P/Pharnaba.html) Pharnabazus (2) Pharnabazus as Ares Pharnabazus (c.435? - after 373 BCE): Persian nobleman, between 413 and 3 87 satrap op Hellespontine Phrygia. Pharnabazus was the son of a Persian nobleman named Pharnaces, who was satrap of Hellespontin e Phrygia, i.e., the northwest of what is now Turkey. The family belonged to the highest Pers ian elite: its founder was another Pharnaces, who had been mayor of the palace of his nephew , king Darius I the Great. The descendants of this Pharnaces remained closely related to th e great king: for example, the Pharnabazus who is the subject of this article married to a da ughter of king Artaxerxes II Mnemon (below). Pharnabazus succeeded his father before the winter of 413/412. We can hardly be more precise . His father was still in office in 422, and that is all we know. But whatever the precise mo ment of Pharnabazus' accession to the satrapal throne, it is certain that in 413/412, he wa s involved in negotiations between Persia and the Greek town Sparta...[much more] (http://www.livius.org/pha-phd/pharnabazus/pharnabazus02.html)
