Rabba 11.||p. 84|The ten tribes are on the other side of the river Sambation, and the Jews at present scattere|d over the earth are those of Judah and Benjamin.--Gen. Rabba 73.|(http://www.sacred-texts.com/jud/tmm/tmm07.htm)|Turnus Rufus asked this question also of Rabbi Akiva, "Why is the Sabbath distinguished fro|m other days?" Rabbi Akiva replied, "Why art thou distinguished from other men?" The answer w|as, "Because it hath pleased my Master thus to honor me." And so retorted Akiva, "It hath ple|ased God to honor His Sabbath." "But what I mean," replied the other, "was how dost thou kno|w that it is the Sabbath-day?" The reply was, "The river Sambatyon proves it; the necromance|r proves it; the grave of thy father proves it, for the smoke thereof rises not on the Sabbat|h."|--Sanhedrin, fol. 65, col. 2.||See Bereshith Rabba, fol. 4, with reference to what is here said about Turnus Rufus and his f|ather's grave. The proof from the necromancer lies in the allegation that his art was unsucce|ssful if practiced on the Sabbath-day. The Sambatyon, Rashi says, is a pebbly river which rus|hes along all the days of the week except the Sabbath, on which it is perfectly still and qui|et. In the Machsor for Pentecost (D. Levi's ed. p. 81), it is styled "the incomprehensible ri|ver," and a footnote thereto informs us that "This refers to the river said to rest on the Sa|bbath from throwing up stones, etc., which it does not cease to do all the rest of the week.|" (See Sanhedrin, fol. 65, col. 2; Yalkut on Isaiah, fol. 3, 1; Pesikta Tanchuma. The inscription was on a royal seal dating to the period of the Firs t Temple. The seal has the name of Yehudi, son of Shelemiah, one of the top officials in th e court of the last Judean king prior to the destruction of the First Temple, King Zedekiah . He is mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah. The seal was found at the site of the palace o f the Judean kings, according to archaeologists under the supervision of Dr. Eilat Mazar of H ebrew University. Several years ago, another circa-580 BCE royal seal was found in the same a rea. Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com BD BARUCH Blessed Jeremiah’s scribe (Jer. 32: 12 f.; Jer. 36); taken to Egypt (Jer. 43: 2-6; Jer. 45). Who are the Prophets of the Jewish Scriptures? The following list of prophets is based on the Talmud and Rashi. 39. Barukh ben Neriah Jeremiah 32, 36, 43, 45 BARUCH 1. An amanuensis (copyist) of Jeremiah -- Jeremiah 32:12-16; 36:4-32; 43:3-6; 45:1,2 BARUCH Blessed. 1. The secretary of the prophet (Jeremiah 32:12; 36:4). He was of the tribe of Judah (51:59) . To him Jeremiah dictated his prophecies regarding the invasion of the Babylonians and the C aptivity. These he read to the people from a window in the temple in the fourth year of the r eign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah (Jeremiah 36). He afterwards read them before the counsellor s of the king at a private interview; and then to the king himself, who, after hearing a par t of the roll, cut it with a penknife, and threw it into the fire of his winter parlour, wher e he was sitting. During the siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, he was the keeper of the deed of purchase Je remiah had made of the territory of Hanameel (Jeremiah 32:12). Being accused by his enemies o f favouring the Chaldeans, he was cast, with Jeremiah, into prison, where he remained till th e capture of Jerusalem (B.C. 586). He probably died in Babylon. BARUCH (blessed). 1. Son of Neriah, the friend, (Jeremiah 32:12) amanuensis, (Jeremiah 26:4-32) and faithful at tendant of Jeremiah. (Jeremiah 36:10) ff. (B.C. 603.) He was of a noble family, comp. (Jeremi ah 51:59) Bar. 1:1, and of distinguished acquirements. His enemies accused him of influencin g Jeremiah in favor of the Chaldaeans, (Jeremiah 43:3) cf. Jere 27:13 And he was imprisoned u ntil the capture of Jerusalem, B.C. 586. By the permission of Nebuchadnezzar he remained wit h Jeremiah at Mizpeh, Jos. Ant. x.9, 1, but was afterwards forced to go down to Egypt. (Jerem iah 43:6) Nothing is known certainly of the close of his life. BARUCH Baruch = "blessed" (baw-rook') 1. friend, amanuensis, and faithful attendant of Jeremiah BARUCH ba'-ruk, bar'-uk (baruk; Barouch, "blessed"): (1) Son of Neriah and brother of Seraiah, King Zedekiah's chamberlain (Jeremiah 51:59). He wa s the devoted friend (Jeremiah 32:12), the amanuensis (36:4,32) and faithful attendant (36:10 ; Josephus, Ant, X, vi, 2) of the prophet Jeremiah. He seems to have been of noble family (se e Ant, X, ix, 1; compare Jeremiah 51:59; Baruch 1:1). He was also according to Josephus a ma n of unusual acquirements (Ant., X, ix, 1). He might have risen to a high position and seeme d conscious of this, but under Jeremiah's influence (see Jeremiah 45:5) he repressed his ambi tion, being content to throw in his lot with the great prophet whose secretary and companio n he became. Jeremiah dictated his prophecies to Baruch, who read them to the people (Jeremia h 36). The king (Jehoiakim) was greatly angered at these prophecies and had Baruch arrested a nd the roll burnt. Baruch however rewrote the prophet's oracles. In the final siege of Jerusa lem Baruch stood by his master, witnessing the purchase by the latter of his ancestral estat e in Anathoth (Jeremiah 32). According to Josephus (Ant., X, ix, 1) he continued to reside wi th Jeremiah at Mizpah after the fall of Jerusalem. Subsequent to the murder of Gedaliah, he w as accused of having unduly influenced Jeremiah when the latter urged the people to remain i n Judah--a fact which shows how great was the influence which Baruch was believed to have ha d over his master (Jeremiah 43:3). He was carried with Jeremiah to Egypt (Jeremiah 43:6; Ant , X, ix, 6), and thereafter our knowledge of him is merely legendary. According to a traditio n preserved by Jerome (on Isaiah 30:6 f) he died in Egypt soon after reaching that country. T wo other traditions say that he went, or by Nebuchadnezzar was carried, to Babylon after thi s king conquered Egypt. The high character of Baruch and the important part he played in th e life and work of Jeremiah induced later generations still further to enhance his reputation , and a large number of spurious writings passed under his name, among them the following: (a) The \APOCALYPSE OF BARUCH\ (which see); (b) the Book of Baruch; (c) the Rest of the Words of Baruch; (d) the Gnostic Book of Baruch; (e) the Latin Book of Baruch, composed originally in Latin; (f) a Greek Apocalypse of Baruch belonging to the 2nd century of our era; (g) another Book of Baruch belonging to the 4th or 5th century. Baruch: Hebrew prophet Jeremiah's friend and secretary, who was employed to write from dictation or t o copy manuscripts.. (http://www.geocities.com/spenta_mainyu/glossary.htm) Baruch ben Neryah Both Baruch and Neryah were descendants of Rachav: Megillah 14b According to some (Talmud, Megillah 14B and 15A), Baruch Ben Neriah was a prophet, which wou ld make Ezra the direct disciple of a Biblical prophet. [http://web.gnu.walfield.org/mail-archive/sinai/2000-July/0003.html] Baruch ben Neryah Baruch ben Neryah began to learn at a young age from the prophet, Yirmiyah. He displayed cons iderable precociousness, according to a Midrash (Otzar Midrashim, pg. 35) which describes hi m learning Sefer Vayikra in a single day, before he had turned five years old. (See that Midr ash for an interesting comparison of Baruch ben Neryah and another important person, Ben Sira .) Baruch became Yirmiyahu's assistant and scribe in the years leading up to the destructio n of the first Beis haMikdash. He first appears in Tanach in Yirmiyahu 32, in a story which h as deep meaning. HaShem told Yirmiyah that his cousin, Chanamel, would come to him to sel l a family field; Yirmiyah was to redeem the field, and Baruch was to save the legal document . Yirmiyah asked Gd what purpose there would be in doing this, given that HaShem was giving t he Jews, and Israel, over to the Babylonians. HaShem responded that He was going to bring u s back to the land, and this act of purchasing the field and saving the document would symbol ize the hope for return. As we'll see later, this story would have great meaning in Baruch' s life. Baruch also played a key role in a showdown between Yirmiyah and the Jewish king, Ye hoyakim (Yirmiyahu 36). HaShem told Yirmiyah to record a series of prophecies, which became t he core of the book of Eichah (Lamentations). The scroll was to be read in public, in the Bei s haMikdash, on a fast day. Baruch took the scroll and performed the public reading, and th e people listened to him. The audience included members of the king's court, and the scroll w as brought back to Yehoyakim. When Yehoyakim heard it, he had the scroll torn up and burned.T he Gemara (Moed Katan 26a) records Yehoyakim's reaction to the scroll. Yehoyakim was not trou bled by the description of destruction and desolation; he responded to each line, "I will sti ll be the king

" It was only when the prophecy predicted that the Jewish king would be depose d, and the other nations would take over, that Yehoyakim had the scroll torn up and burned. B aruch ben Neryah was something of a political figure, too. In Yirmiyahu 42, Yirmiyahu warne d the Jews not to flee to Egypt before the invading Babylonians. One group responded that Yir miyahu was presenting false prophecy, and that the mastermind behind this was actually Baruc h ben Neryah. They claimed that Baruch was an agent of the Babylonians. In the end, Baruch w ent to Bavel, with Yirmiyahu. Baruch became a spiritual leader, as a prophet (Megillah 15a) a nd a political leader as a member of the Babylonian king's court (Sifri Bamidbar 99). He wa s recognized as an authority; he sat on the court which decided when to add a month to the Je wish calendar (Yerushalmi Sanhedrin 1:2). Baruch was known as someone whose deeds marked hi m as an outstanding person (Sifri Bamidbar 99, and other Midrashim). Baruch lived a life o f personal struggle, to a certain extent. Yirmiyahu 45 records a cryptic message from Gd to B aruch. Gd accuses Baruch of seeking glory for himself, and Gd says that he should be happy th at he has his life, at a time when HaShem is uprooting so much. The Midrash (Mechilta deR' Yi shmael on Parshas Bo) says that Baruch was upset that, to that point, he had not received per sonal prophecy. He compared himself to Elisha, and others who served prophets and then becam e prophets, themselves. HaShem responded that he should not be complaining thus. Ultimately , as we mentioned above, Baruch did gain prophecy in Bavel. Baruch never made it back to Isr ael, although he did live long enough to see the rebuilding of the Beis haMikdash. When the t ime actually came, Baruch was too old to make the trip (Shir haShirim Rabbah 5:1). Baruch tra ined Ezra, who became the leader of the Jews in Israel after Baruch died. Ezra stalled his ow n trip to Israel for seven years, to learn by Baruch, rather than lead the Jews. The studyin g which Ezra did by Baruch was important enough to override his duty as a leader of the Jewis h people. I think this goes back to the story of Yirmiyahu and his field, in Anasos. HaShem t old Yirmiyahu that Baruch would hold the document for the sale, and with it he would hold th e hopes of the Jewish people. Baruch held the learning which he had accumulated by Yirmiyahu , and he passed it along to Ezra for the rebuilding of the second Beis haMikdash. This enable d the returning Jews to have a connection back to the first Beis haMikdash; Yirmiyahu led dir ectly into Ezra, via the link of Baruch ben Neryah. Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com BD HAMAN Chief minister of Ahasuerus (Esth. 3 - 9); his unsuccessful attempt to destroy the Jews gav e rise to the Jewish Feast of Purim. BD Esther, Book of Contains the history that led to the institution of the Jewish feast of Purim. The story belo ngs to the time of the Captivity. Ahasuerus, king of Persia (most probably Xerxes), had decid ed to divorce his queen Vashti because she refused to show her beauty to the people and the p rinces. Esther, adopted daughter of Mordecai the Jew, was chosen as her successor, on accoun t of her beauty. Haman, chief man at the king’s court, hated Mordecai, and having cast lots t o find a suitable day, obtained a decree to put all Jews to death. Esther, at great persona l risk, revealed her own nationality and obtained a reversal of the decree. It was decided th at two days of feasting should be annually observed in honor of this deliverance. They were c alled, because of the lot (Pur) that Haman had cast for the destruction of the Jews. A Hivite through the ggfather's maternal line. Haman - the evil Persian megalomaniac, who saw in the Jewish People and in Mordechai, in part icular, the block in his path to the throne of Persia. To get rid of this "obstacle," he form ulated a plot, based on a lottery (a "Pur," in Persian), by which he would effectively exterm inate the entire Jewish population. Fortunately, at that time, we were able to assemble enoug h "zechut," or merit, to convince HaShem that we were still worthy of being saved. And Haman and his ten sons wound up swinging from the gallows that he had prepared for Mordec hai. HUMOROUS STORIES AND SITUATIONS In the Writings: Towards the end of the story, Haman, prostrating himself before Esther to beg for his life, f ell on her bed. The King misinterpreted what happened and said (Esther 7:8): "Will he even fo rce the queen while I am in the house?" Haman, second to the King, to whom all bowed, the arc hitect of the plot to viciously exterminate the Jews, suddenly became a klutz. The Jews wer e saved. IRONY In the Prophets: A similar device is also used in the Book of Esther. Haman thought the king was talking abou t rewarding him when he actually was talking about Mordechai. Haman was then forced to show M ordechai the honors that he actually wanted for himself. --HUMOR IN THE BIBLE [http://academic.brooklyn.cuny.edu/economic/friedman/bibhumor.htm]

Sennacherib accordingly invaded Judah and took some of the fenced citie s (2 Kgs. 18: 13; 2 Chr. 32: 1; Isa. 36: 1); sent messengers from Lachish, demanding Hezekiah ’s subjection (2 Kgs. 18: 17; 2 Chr. 32: 9; Isa. 36: 2); sent another letter (2 Kgs. 19: 9 ; 2 Chr. 32: 17; Isa. 37: 9); his army was destroyed (2 Kgs 19: 35; 2 Chr. 32: 21; Isa. 37: 3 6); he was slain by his sons (2 Kgs. 19: 37; 2 Chr. 32: 21; Isa. 37: 38). Sennacherib Sennacherib or Senherib, d. 681 B.C., king of Assyria (705-681 B.C.). The son of Sargon, Senn acherib spent most of his reign fighting to maintain the empire established by his father. I t is difficult to determine the exact sequence of his conquests, but his first campaign seem s to have been waged against Babylonia. Later he marched against an uprising of the western n ations (Phoenicia, Palestine, and Philistia), who were supported by Egypt. He defeated the Eg yptians at Eltekeh (701 B.C.) and prepared to take Jerusalem. Isaiah had warned Hezekiah no t to join the uprising against Assyria, but the king had refused the advice. Thus, Sennacheri b destroyed many Judaean cities and besieged Jerusalem, forcing the king to pay a heavy tribu te. Hezekiah built the famous Siloam Tunnel when the water supply was threatened by the appro ach of the Assyrian forces. Disturbances in Babylonia called the king to that area, and he wa ged a naval campaign against the Chaldaeans. He laid Elam waste and finally fought both the C haldaeans and the Elamites at the battle of Halulina (Khaluli) (c.691 B.C.). The exact outcom e of the battle is uncertain. Two years later Sennacherib captured and destroyed Babylon. H e constructed canals and aqueducts and built a magnificent palace at Nineveh. Two of his sons , jealous of their brother Esar-haddon, murdered Sennacherib. Esar-haddon succeeded to the th rone. See L. L. Homor, Sennacherib's Invasion of Palestine (1926, repr. 1966); B. S. "Like the Persian Xerxes, he was weak and vainglo rious, cowardly under reverse, and cruel and boastful in success." He first set himself to br eak up the powerful combination of princes who were in league against him. Among these was He zekiah, who had entered into an alliance with Egypt against Assyria. He accordingly led a ver y powerful army of at least 200,000 men into Judea, and devastated the land on every side, ta king and destroying many cities (2 Kings 18:13-16; Compare Isaiah 222429,24,29, and 2 Chronic les 32:1-8). His own account of this invasion, as given in the Assyrian annals, is in these w ords: "Because Hezekiah, king of Judah, would not submit to my yoke, I came up against him, a nd by force of arms and by the might of my power I took forty-six of his strong fenced cities ; and of the smaller towns which were scattered about, I took and plundered a countless numbe r. From these places I took and carried off 200,156 persons, old and young, male and female , together with horses and mules, asses and camels, oxen and sheep, a countless multitude; an d Hezekiah himself I shut up in Jerusalem, his capital city, like a bird in a cage, buildin g towers round the city to hem him in, and raising banks of earth against the gates, so as t o prevent escape...Then upon Hezekiah there fell the fear of the power of my arms, and he sen t out to me the chiefs and the elders of Jerusalem with 30 talents of gold and 800 talents o f silver, and divers treasures, a rich and immense booty...All these things were brought to m e at Nineveh, the seat of my government." (Compare Isaiah 22:1-13 for description of the feel ings of the inhabitants of Jerusalem at such a crisis.) Hezekiah was not disposed to become an Assyrian feudatory. He accordingly at once sought hel p from Egypt (2 Kings 18:20-24). Sennacherib, hearing of this, marched a second time into Pal estine (2 Kings 18:17,37; 19; 2Chr 32:9-23; Isaiah 36:2-22. Isaiah 37:25 should be rendered " dried up all the Nile-arms of Matsor," i.e., of Egypt, so called from the "Matsor" or great f ortification across the isthmus of Suez, which protected it from invasions from the east). Se nnacherib sent envoys to try to persuade Hezekiah to surrender, but in vain. (See TIRHAKAH . ) He next sent a threatening letter (2 Kings 19:10-14), which Hezekiah carried into the templ e and spread before the Lord. Isaiah again brought an encouraging message to the pious king ( 2 Kings 19:20-34). "In that night" the angel of the Lord went forth and smote the camp of th e Assyrians. In the morning, "behold, they were all dead corpses." The Assyrian army was anni hilated. This great disaster is not, as was to be expected, taken notice of in the Assyrian annals. Though Sennacherib survived this disaster some twenty years, he never again renewed his attem pt against Jerusalem. He was murdered by two of his own sons (Adrammelech and Sharezer), an d was succeeded by another son, Esarhaddon (B.C. 681), after a reign of twenty-four years. SENNACHERIB (sin, the moon, increases brothers ), was the son and successor of Sargon. [SARGON] His nam e in the original is read as Tsinakki-irib , the meaning of which, as given above indicates t hat he was not the first-born of his father. Sennacherib mounted the throne B.C. 702. His eff orts were directed to crushing the revolt of Babylonia, which he invaded with a large army. M erodach-baladan ventured on a battle, but was defeated and driven from the country. In his th ird year, B.C. 700, Sennacherib turned his arms toward the west, chastised Sidon, and, havin g probably concluded a convention with his chief enemy finally marched against Hezekiah, kin g of Judah. It was at this time that "Sennacherib came up against all the fenced cities of Ju dah, and took them." (2 Kings 18:13) There can be no doubt that the record which he has lef t of his campaign against "Hiskiah" in his third year is the war with Hezekiah so briefly tou ched in vs. 13-16 of this chapter. In the following year (B.C. 699) Sennacherib made his seco nd expedition into Palestine. Hezekiah had again revolted, and claimed the protection of Egyp t. Sennacherib therefore attacked Egypt, and from his camp at Lachish and Libnah he sent an i nsulting letter to Hezekiah at Jerusalem. In answer to Hezekiah’s prayer an event occurred wh ich relieved both Egypt and Judea from their danger. In one night the Assyrians lost, eithe r by a pestilence or by some more awful manifestation of divine power, 185,000 men

The cam p immediately broke up; the king fled. Sennacherib reached his capital in safety, and was no t deterred by the terrible disaster which had befallen his arms from engaging in other wars , though he seems thenceforward to have carefully avoided Palestine. Sennacherib reigned 22 y ears and was succeeded by Esar-haddon, B.C. 680. Sennacherib was one of the most magnificen t of the Assyrian kings. Seems to have been the first who fixed the seat of government perman ently at Nineveh, which he carefully repaired and adorned with splendid buildings. His greate st work is the grand palace Kouyunjik. Of the death of Sennacherib nothing is known beyond th e brief statement of Scripture that "as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, A drammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword and escaped into the land of Armeni a." (2 Kings 19:37; Isaiah 37:38) SENNACHERIB se-nak'-er-ib (cancheribh; Sennachereim, Assyrian Sin-akhierba, "the moon-god Sin has increas ed the brothers"): Sennacherib (704-682 BC) ascended the throne of Assyria after the death of his father Sargon . Appreciating the fact that Babylon would be difficult to control, instead of endeavoring t o conciliate the people he ignored them. The Babylonians, being indignant, crowned a man of h umble origin, Marduk-zakir-shum by name. He ruled only a month, having been driven out by th e irrepressible Merodach-baladan, who again appeared on the scene. In order to fortify himself against Assyria the latter sent an embassy to Hezekiah, apparentl y for the purpose of inspiring the West to rebel against Assyria (2 Kings 20:12-19). Sennacherib in his first campaign marched into Babylonia. He found Merodach-baladan entrenche d at Kish, about 9 miles from Babylon, and defeated him; after which he entered the gates o f Babylon, which had been thrown open to him. He placed a Babylonian, named Bel-ibni, on th e throne. This campaign was followed by an invasion of the country of the Cassites and Iasubigalleans . In his third campaign he directed his attention to the West, where the people had become re stless under the Assyrian yoke. Hezekiah had been victorious over the Philistines (2 Kings 18 :8). In preparation to withstand a siege, Hezekiah had built a conduit to bring water withi n the city walls (2 Kings 20:20). Although strongly opposed by the prophet Isaiah, gifts wer e sent to Egypt, whence assistance was promised (Isaiah 30:1-4). Apparently also the Phoenici ans and Philistines, who had been sore pressed by Assyria, had made provision to resist Assyr ia. The first move was at Ekron, where the Assyrian governor Padi was put into chains and sen t to Hezekiah at Jerusalem. Sennacherib, in 701 BC, moved against the cities in the West. He ravaged the environs of Tyre , but made no attempt to take the city, as he was without a naval force. After Elulaeus the k ing of Sidon fled, the city surrendered without a battle, and Ethbaal was appointed king. Num erous cities at once sent presents to the king of Assyria. Ashkelon and other cities were tak en. The forces of Egypt were routed at Eltekeh, and Ekron was destroyed. He claims to have co nquered 46 strongholds of Hezekiah's territory, but he did not capture Jerusalem, for concern ing the king he said, in his annals, "himself like a bird in a cage in Jerusalem, his royal c ity, I penned him." He states, also, how he reduced his territory, and how Hezekiah sent to h im 30 talents of gold and 800 talents of silver, besides hostages. The Biblical account of this invasion is found in 2 Kings 18:13-19:37; Isa 36; 37. The Assyri an account differs considerably from it; but at the same time it corroborates it in many deta ils. One of the striking parallels is the exact amount of gold which Hezekiah sent to the Ass yrian king (see The Expository Times, XII, 225,405; XIII, 326). In the following year Sennacherib returned to Babylonia to put down a rebellion by Bal-ibni a nd Merodach-baladan. The former was sent to Assyria, and the latter soon afterward died. Ashu rnadin-shum, the son of Sennacherib, was then crowned king of Babylon. A campaign into Cilici a and Cappadocia followed. In 694 BC Sennacherib attacked the Elamites, who were in league with the Babylonians. In reve nge, the Elamites invaded Babylonia and carried off Ashur-nadin-shum to Elam, and made Nergal ushezib king of Babylon. He was later captured and in turn carried off to Assyria. In 691 B C Sennacherib again directed his attention to the South, and at Khalute fought with the combi ned forces. Two years later he took Babylon, and razed it to the ground. In 681 BC Sennacherib was murdered by his two sons (2 Kings 19:37; see SHAREZER). Esar-haddo n their younger brother, who was at the time conducting a campaign against Ararat, was declar ed king in his stead. By way of rewarding his piety, God granted Hezekiah a brilliant victory over SENNACHERIB. This Assyrian king, who had conquered the whole world, 51 equipped an army against Hezekiah l ike unto which there is none, unless it be the army of the four kings whom Abraham routed, o r the army to be raised by God and Magog in the Messianic time. SENNACHERIB's army consiste d of more than two millions and a half of horsemen, Among them forty-five thousand princes si tting in chariots and surrounded by their paramours, by eighty thousand armor-clad soldiers , and sixty thousand swordsmen. The camp extended over a space of four hundred parasangs, an d the saddle-beasts standing neck to neck formed a line forty parasangs long. The host was di vided into four divisions. After the first of them had passed the Jordan, it was well nigh dr y, for the soldiers had all slaked their thirst with water of the river. The second divisio n found nothing to quench their thirst except the water gathered under the hoofs of the horse s. The third division was forced to dig wells, and when the fourth division crossed the Jorda n, they kicked up great clouds of dust. 52 With this vast army SENNACHERIB hastened onward, in accordance with the disclosures of the as trologers, who warned him that he would fail in his object of capturing Jerusalem, if he arri ved there later than the day set by them. His journey having lasted but one day instead of te n, as he had expected, he rested at Nob. A raised platform was there erected for SENNACHERIB , whence he could view Jerusalem. On first beholding the Judean capital, the Assyrian king ex claimed: "What

Is this Jerusalem, the city for whose sake I gathered together my whole army , for whose sake I first conquered all other lands? Is it not smaller and weaker than all th e cities of the nations I subdued with my strong hand?" He stretched himself and shook his he ad, and waved his hand contemptuously toward the Temple mount and the sanctuary crowning it . When his warriors urged him to make his attack upon Jerusalem, he bade them take their eas e for one night, and be prepared to storm the city the next day. It seemed no great undertaki ng. Each warrior would but have to pick up as much mortar from the wall as is needed to sea l a letter and the whole city would disappear. But SENNACHERIB made the mistake of not procee ding directly to the attack upon the city. If he had made the assault at once, it would hav e been successful, for the sin of Saul against the priest at Nob had not yet been wholly expi ated; on that very day it was fully atoned for. 53 In the following night, which was the Pass over night, when Hezekiah and the people began to sing the Hallel Psalms, 54 the giant host w as annihilated. The archangel Gabriel 55 sent by God to ripen the fruits of the field, was ch arged to address himself to the task of making away with the Assyrians, and he fulfilled hi s mission so well that of all the millions of the army, SENNACHERIB alone was saved with hi s two sons, his son-in-law 56 Nebuchadnezzar, and Nebuzaradan. 57 The death of the Assyrian s happened when the angel permitted them to hear the "song of the celestials." 58 Their soul s were burnt, though their garments remained intact. 59 Such an end was too good for SENNACHE RIB. To him a disgraceful death was apportioned. On his flight away from Jerusalem, he me t a Divine apparition in the guise of an old man. He questioned SENNACHERIB as to what he wou ld say to the kings allied with him, in reply to their inquiry about the fate of their sons a t Jerusalem. SENNACHERIB confessed his dread of a meeting with those kings. The old man advis ed him to have his hair cut off, which would change his appearance beyond recognition. SENNAC HERIB assented, and his advisor sent him to a house in the vicinity to fetch a pair of shears . Here he found some people angels in disguise busying themselves with a hand-mill. They prom ised to give him the shears, provided he ground a measure of grain for them. So it grew lat e and dark by the time SENNACHERIB returned to the old man, and he had to procure a light bef ore his hair could be cut. As he fanned the fire into a flame, a spark flew into his beard an d singed it, and he had to sacrifice his beard as well as his hair. On his return to Assyria , SENNACHERIB found a plank, which he worshipped as an idol, because it was part of the ark w hich had saved Noah from the deluge. He vowed that he would sacrifice his sons to this idol i f he prospered in his next ventures. But his sons heard his vows, and they killed their fathe r, 60 and fled to Kardu where they released the Jewish captives confined there in great numbe rs. With these they marched to Jerusalem, and became proselytes there. The famous scholars Sh emaiah and Abtalion were the descendants of these two sons of SENNACHERIB. 61 MIRACLES WROUGHT FOR HEZEKIAH The destruction of the Assyrian host delivered Hezekiah from an inner as well as an outer ene my, for he had opponents in Jerusalem, Sennacherib Sennacherib[snk´rb] or Senherib, d. 681 B.C., king of Assyria (705–681 B.C.). The son of Sargon, Sennacherib spent most of his reign fighting to maintain the empire establ ished by his father. It is difficult to determine the exact sequence of his conquests, but hi s first campaign seems to have been waged against Babylonia. Later he marched against an upri sing of the western nations (Phoenicia, Palestine, and Philistia), who were supported by Egyp t. He defeated the Egyptians at Eltekeh (701 B.C.) and prepared to take Jerusalem. Isaiah ha d warned Hezekiah not to join the uprising against Assyria, but the king had refused the advi ce. Thus, Sennacherib destroyed many Judaean cities and besieged Jerusalem, forcing the kin g to pay a heavy tribute. Hezekiah built the famous Siloam Tunnel when the water supply was t hreatened by the approach of the Assyrian forces. Disturbances in Babylonia called the king t o that area, and he waged a naval campaign against the Chaldaeans. He laid Elam waste and fin ally fought both the Chaldaeans and the Elamites at the battle of Halulina (Khaluli) (c.691 B .C.). The exact outcome of the battle is uncertain. Two years later Sennacherib captured an d destroyed Babylon. He constructed canals and aqueducts and built a magnificent palace at Ni neveh. Two of his sons, jealous of their brother Esar-haddon, murdered Sennacherib. Esar-hadd on succeeded to the throne. (http://www.1upinfo.com/encyclopedia/S/Sennache.html) Sennacherib In the third year of his reign he marched against Hatti (The land of the Hittites) and afte r taking many cities he claims to have laid siege to Jerusalem while Hezekiah was king. - Acc ording to Prism of Sennacherib. This would also align with the Biblical record describing eve nts in the fourteenth year of Hezekiah. - (2 Kings 18:13-19:37) His death, at the hands of hi s own sons, is recorded in 2 Kings 19:36, 37 and in 2 Chronicles 32:21. There is an Assyria n King "YaReB" noted in Hosea 5:13 and 10:13. I believe this king is SennacheRiB. I note als o that Shalmaneser V (Shalman) is mentioned in 10:14. I believe this supports my claim that t here were coregencies in Assyria during the reigns of Ahaz and Hezekiah. Recall that it was A haz who sent to the "Kings" of Assyria - 2 Chronicles 28:16. And also that 2 Kings 18:10 say s (of the Assyrian kings) "and THEY took it. i.e., Samaria. So it is possible that Assyria wa s divided into two kingdoms, with two kings (one in Babel and one in Nineveh), from the day s of Tiglathpileser III and Shalmaneser V. It is possible that Sargon II shared the throne wi th Shalmaneser, and that Sargon's son, Sannacherib, may have been a coregent with Shalmanese r as well. This is a difficult period wherein there were probably several power struggles. O r possibly Sannacherib was king in Assyria (as crown prince) and Sargon was king in Babylon d uring the last years of his reign. (http://members.aol.com/gparrishjr/Assyria.html)

(2) The second priest i.e., next in rank to the high priest (2 Kgs. 25: 18; Jer. 21: 1; Jer . 29: 25, 29; Jer. 37: 3; Jer. 52: 24). ZEPHANIAH Jehovah has concealed, or Jehovah of darkness. 2. The son of Maaseiah, the "second priest" in the reign of Zedekiah, often mentioned in Jere miah as having been sent from the king to inquire (Jeremiah 21:1) regarding the coming woes w hich he had denounced, and to entreat the prophet's intercession that the judgment threatene d might be averted (Jeremiah 29:25,26,29; 37:3; 52:24). He, along with some other captive Jew s, was put to death by the king of Babylon "at Riblah in the land of Hamath" (2 Kings 25:21). ZEPHANIAH 1. A priest in the reign of Zedekiah, king of Judah: Sent by the king to Jeremiah with a mess age soliciting the Prophet’s intercession and prayers -- Jeremiah 21:1,2; Shows Jeremiah th e false prophet’s letter -- Jeremiah 29:25-29; Taken to Riblah and killed -- 2 Kings 25:18-21 ; Jeremiah 52:24-27 ZEPHANIAH (hidden by Jehovah ). 2. The son of Maaseiah, (Jeremiah 21:1) and sagan or second priest in the reign of Zedekiah . (B.C. 588.) He succeeded Jehoida, (Jeremiah 29:25,26) and was probably a ruler of the templ e, whose office it was, among others, to punish pretenders to the gift of prophecy. (Jeremia h 29:29) On the capture of Jerusalem he was taken and slain at Riblah. (Jeremiah 52:24,27 ; 2 Kings 25:18,21) ZEPHANIAH zef-a-ni'-a (tsephanyah, tsephanyahu, "Yah hath treasured"): (4) A priest, the second in rank in the days of Jeremiah. He was a leader of the "patriotic " party which opposed Jeremiah. Nevertheless, he was sent to the prophet as a messenger of Ki ng Zedekiah when Nebuchadnezzar was about to attack the city (Jeremiah 21:1) and at other cri ses (Jeremiah 37:3; compare 29:25,29; 2 Kings 25:18). That he continued to adhere to the poli cy of resistance against Babylonian authority is indicated by the fact that he was among th e leaders of Israel taken by Nebuzaradan before the king of Babylon, and killed at Riblah ( 2 Kings 25:18 parallel Jeremiah 52:24). Zephaniah = "Jehovah has treasured" (tsef-an-yaw') 2. son of Maaseiah and second priest in the reign of king Zedekiah of Judah; succeeded Jehoi ada and an officer of the temple; slain at Riblah on the capture of Jerusalem

The Egyptians love|d him much, because he prayed and the beasts died which used to come up from the river Nile a|nd devour men. These beasts were called 'crocodiles.' When Alexander the son of Philip, the M|acedonian, came (to Egypt), he made enquiries about his grave, and took and brought him to Al|exandria. This (prophet) during his life said to the Egyptians, 'a child shall be born--tha|t is the Messiah--of a virgin, and He shall be laid in a crib2, and He will shake and cast do|wn the idols.' From that time, and until Christ was born, the Egyptians used to set a virgi|n and a baby in a crib, and to worship him, because of what Jeremiah said to them, that He sh|ould be born in a crib.||2 See Migne, Patrologiae Cursus, Ser.
