To th ese references should be added probably Nehemiah 12:24, where commentators read, "Jeshua, Bin nui, Kadmiel" for "Jeshua the son of Kadmiel." Perhaps Jozabad (Ezra 8:33) is a "son" of thi s same Jeshua; compare Ezra 8:33 = 1 Esdras 8:63, where the King James Version is "Jesu," th e Revised Version (British and American) "Jesus." The second, whose story I am now writing, who had the surname of the Mindful|, was the grandson of the former, by his daughter Parysatis, who brought Darius four sons, th|e eldest Artaxerxes, the next Cyrus, and two younger than these, Ostanes and Oxathres. Cyru|s took his name of the ancient Cyrus, as he, they say, had his from the sun, which, in the Pe|rsian language, is called Cyrus. Artaxerxes was at first called Arsicas; Dinon says Oarses; b|ut it is utterly improbable that Ctesias (however otherwise he may have filled his books wit|h a perfect farrago of incredible and senseless fables) should be ignorant of the name of th|e king with whom he lived as his physician, attending upon himself, his wife, his mother, an|d his children.||Cyrus, from his earliest youth, showed something of a headstrong and vehement character; Arta|xerxes, on the other side, was gentler in everything, and of a nature more yielding and sof|t in its action. He married a beautiful and virtuous wife, at the desire of his parents, bu|t kept her as expressly against their wishes.|...[MUCH MORE]|(http://www.4literature.net/Plutarch/Artaxerxes/)

While engaged wit h all Israel in laying siege to Gibbethon, a town of southern Dan (Joshua 19:44), a conspirac y broke out in his army, and he was slain by Baasha (1 Kings 15:25-28), after a reign of tw o years (B.C. 955-953). The assassination of Nadab was followed by that of his whole house, a nd thus this great Ephraimite family became extinct (1 Kings 15:29). NADAB na'-dab (nadhabh, "noble"; Nadab): (4) Son of Jeroboam I and after him for two years king of Israel (1 Kings 14:20; 15:25). Whil e Nadab was investing Gibbethon, a Philistine stronghold, Baasha, who probably was an office r in the army, as throne-robbers usually were, conspired against him, slew him and seized th e throne (1 Kings 15:27-31). With the assassination of Nadab the dynasty of Jeroboam was exti rpated, as foretold by the prophet Ahijah (1 Kings 14). This event is typical of the entire h istory of the Northern Kingdom, characterized by revolutions and counter-revolutions. He was son of Ahijah of the tribe of Issachar and conspired against Kin g Nadab, (1 Kings 15:27) and killed him with his whole family. He appears to have been of hum ble origin. (1 Kings 16:2) It was probably in the 13th year of his reign that he made war o n Asa, and began to fortify Ramah. He was defeated by the unexpected alliance of Asa with Ben -hadad I. of Damascus. Baasha died in the 24th year of his reign, and was buried in Tirzah, ( Solomon 6:4) which he had made his capital. (1 Kings 16:6; 2 Chronicles 16:1-6) BAASHA King of Israel 1 Kings 15:16-22,27-34; 16:1-7; 21:22; 2 Kings 9:9; 2 Chronicles 16:1-6; Jeremiah 41:9 BAASHA Bravery, the third king of the separate kingdom of Israel, and founder of its second dynast y (1 Kings 15; 16; 2Chr 16:1-6). He was the son of Ahijah of the tribe of Issachar. The cit y of Tirzah he made the capital of his kingdom, and there he was buried, after an eventful re ign of twenty-four years (1 Kings 15:33). On account of his idolatries his family was extermi nated, according to the word of the prophet Jehu (1 Kings 16:3,4,10-13). BAASHA King of Israel. Baasha, son of Ahijah, and of common birth (1 Kings 16:2), usurped the thron e of Nadab, the son of Jeroboam, killed Nadab and exterminated the house of Jeroboam. He carr ied on a long warfare with Asa, the king of Judah (compare Jeremiah 41:9), began to build Ram ah, but was prevented from completing this work by Ben- hadad, the king of Syria. He is tol d by the prophet Jehu that because of his sinful reign the fate of his house would be like th at of Jeroboam. Baasha reigned 24 years. His son Elah who succeeded him and all the members o f his family were murdered by the usurper Zimri (1 Kings 15:16; 16:1; 2 Chronicles 16:1). Th e fate of his house is referred to in 1 Kings 21:22; 2 Kings 9:9. Compare ASA; ELAH; ZIMRI. BA'ASHA ba' a-sha King of Israel, 911- 888 BCE Born: ? Died: 888 BCE Heritage: Israel, Tirzah Faith: Jewish Father: Ahijah Mother: ? Spouse: ? Children: son: Elah QUICK SKETCH While Nadab, king of Israel, was attempting to recover Gibbethon from the Philistines, he wa s assassinated by Ba'asha, who then became king. Ba'asha’s first act when in power was to sla y all the descendants of Nadab and those of Jeroboam, his father. While this fulfilled the cu rse on the house of Jeroboam, it was not condoned by the prophets nor priests. Ba'asha contin ued the worship of the calf-idols and was warned by Jehu that he and his descendants may mee t the same fate as that of Jeroboam’s house. Ba'asha established a new capital, Tirzah, and continued the war with Judah. He began to fort ify the city of Ramah, with intentions of blocking the roads leading from Jerusalem to the no rth. This would seriously affect the trade economy of Jerusalem, and was untenable. Asa, kin g of Judah, hired Ben-Hadad I to attack northern Israel, and thereby force Ba'asha to retrea t from Ramah. Asa took Ramah and Ba'asha retreated to the north, but the wars between Judah a nd Israel continued throughout their long reigns. Ba'asha, the usurper, reigned for 24 year s and his son Elah succeeded him. (http://www.ancientroute.com/people/Baasha.htm)

Please send corrections to rootsweb@propheticmidrash.com BD AHAZIAH The Lord upholds (1) King of Israel; the chief events of his reign were his joint maritime expedition with Jeh oshaphat (2 Chr. 20: 35-37) and the revolt of Moab (see Moabite Stone) (2 Kgs. 1: 2; 2 Kgs. 3 : 4-5; see also 1 Kgs. 22: 40, 49-53; 2 Kgs. 1). AHAZIAH 2. King of Israel History of -- 1 Kings 22:40,49,51-53; 2 Chronicles 20:35-37; 2 Kings 1 Succeeded by Jehoram -- 2 Kings 3:1 AHAZIAH Held by Jehovah. 1. The son and successor of Ahab. He followed the counsels of his mother Jezebel, and imitate d in wickedness the ways of his father. In his reign the Moabites revolted from under his aut hority (2 Kings 3:5-7). He united with Jehoshaphat in an attempt to revive maritime trade b y the Red Sea, which proved a failure (2 Chronicles 20:35-37). His messengers, sent to consul t the god of Ekron regarding his recovery from the effects of a fall from the roof-gallery o f his palace, were met on the way by Elijah, who sent them back to tell the king that he woul d never rise from his bed (1 Kings 22:51; 2 Kings 1:18). AHAZIAH (sustained by the Lord). 1. Son of Ahab and Jezebel eighth king of Israel, reigned B.C. 896-895. After the battle of R amoth in Gilead, in which Ahab perished [AHAB], the vassal king of Moab refused his yearly tr ibute; comp. (Isaiah 16:1) Before Ahaziah could take measures for enforcing his claim, he wa s seriously injured by a fall through a lattice in his palace at Samaria. Being an idolater , he sent to inquire of the oracle of Baalzebub in the Philistine city of Ekron whether he sh ould recover his health. But Elijah, who now for the last time exercised the prophetic office , rebuked him for this impiety, and announced to him his approaching death. The only other re corded transaction of his reign, his endeavor to join the king of Judah in trading to Ophir , is related under JEHOSHAPHAT. (1 Kings 22:49-53; 2 Kings 1:1; 2 Chronicles 20:35-37) AHAZIAH Ahaziah = "Jehovah (Yahu) holds (possesses)" 1. ruler of Israel, son of Ahab AHAZIAH a-ha-zi'-a ('achazyah and 'achazyahu, "Yah holds, or sustains"): I. Ahaziah. Son of Ahab and Jezebel, eighth king of Israel (1 Kings 22:51-2Ki). 1. His Reign: Ahaziah became king over Israel in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, and h e reigned two years, 854-853 BC. There is, here an incongruity between the synchronism and th e length of the reigns of the kings. Jehoshaphat began to reign in the fourth year of Ahab ( 1 Kings 22:41), and he reigned 22 years (1 Kings 16:29). Accordingly Ahaziah's first year, i n the twenty-second year of Ahab, would fall in the nineteenth year of Jehoshaphat. The chron ological statement in 2 Kings 1:17 is probably taken from the Syriac, and both are in harmon y wrath a method of computation followed by certain Greek manuscripts. 2. His Character: A good name does not insure a good character. Ahaziah, the "God-sustained," served Baal and w orshipped him, and provoked to anger Yahweh, the God of Israel, Just as his father before hi m had done. He appears to have been weak and unfortunate, and calamities in quick successio n pursued him. 3. The Revolt of Moab: Ahab had sought the good and became an enemy to the best. His house and the nation suffered t he consequences. "Moab rebelled against Israel after the death of Ahab." Ahaziah appears to h ave been too weak to offer resistance. The Moabite Stone dates the revolt in the days of Ahab . No doubt it began at the time of Ahab's last campaign against Syria. 4. His Maritime Alliance: According to 1 Kings 22:48 f Ahaziah attempted to form an alliance with Jehoshaphat of Juda h to revive the ancient maritime traffic, but failed. According to 2 Chronicles 20:35-37 th e alliance was consummated, in consequence of which the enterprise came to nothing. See JEHOS HAPHAT. 5. His Sickness and Death: Ahaziah suffered a severe accident by falling through the lattice in his upper apartment in S amaria, and lay sick. As a worthy son of Jezebel and Ahab, he sent messengers to consult Baal zebub, the god of Ekron, regarding his recovery. But Israel belonged to Yahweh. Accordingly t he messengers were met by the prophet Elijah who for the last time warns against the corrupti ng moral influences of the Baal religion. "Thus saith Yahweh, Is it because there is no God i n Israel, that thou sendest to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron? therefore thou shal t not come down from the bed whither thou art gone up, but shalt surely die" was the messag e which he sent back to the embassy, and the death of the king speedily followed. Ahaziah I, Ahaziahu AHAZIAH a-ha-zi’ ah King of Israel, 853 - 852 BCE Born: ? Died: 852 BCE Heritage: Israel, Samaria Faith: Jewish (& Melqart?) Father: Ahab Mother: Jezebel Spouse: ? Children: QUICK SKETCH Ahaziah followed his father to the throne without the opposition, but did not bring the milit ary strength of his predecessors. The kingdom of Israel was facing problems from it’s neighbo rs and Ahaziah was not up to enforcing his claims. And it could be that the kingdom was spen t in the wars of Ahab and there was little resolve left. Moab recognized this weakness and re volted, refusing to pay tribute. Jezebel, now dowager Queen, was yet a major force in religio n in Israel, and Ahaziah was sympathetic to the worship of Melqart. Before Ahaziah could address the problem of Moab’s revolt, he fell from an upper window of th e palace and was seriously injured. He then inquired about his future with the oracle of Baal -Zebul in the city of Ekron. The Jewish prophet Elijah rebuked Ahaziah for this idolatry an d announced he would not survive his injury. Ahaziah did die and his brother Jehoram succeede d to the throne. Traditionally, it is believed that after Ahaziah’s fall to the street, the s treet dogs again licked up the blood in accordance with the curse on the heirs of Ahab. (http://www.ancientroute.com/people/Ahaziah1.htm) Ahaziah, King of Israel Ahaziah, King of Israel, was the uncle of Ahaziah, King of Judah. Israel's Ahaziah was the ei ghth king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He was the son of Ahab and Jezebel. He reigned f or two years (852-851 BC). After Ahab's death, the country of Moab, which had earlier been subjugated by Israel, dec lared its independence, and refused to continue paying tribute to Israel. Ahaziah suffered ot her losses, including his health. He fell off the balcony of his palace in Samaria and was se riously injured. Instead of turning to the Lord, he sent messages to the temple of a pagan go d, Baalzebub, at Ekron, to ask whether he would recover from his injuries. But the prophet Elijah intercepted the messengers and told that them that because Ahazia h had chosen to inquire of a pagan god, rather than the Lord, that he would not leave the be d that he was lying on and that he would die. Ahaziah did die, just as Elijah had said. Ahazi ah's brother, Jehoram, became the new king, because Ahaziah did not have a son to succeed him . The name Ahaziah means "Yah holds firm." The story of Ahaziah is found in 1 Kings 22:40-5 3 and in 2 Kings, chapter 1. (http://www.aboutbibleprophecy.com/p117.htm)

Died: 843 BCE Heritage: Israel, Samaria Faith: Jewish Father: Ahab Mother: Jezebel Spouse: ? Children: ? QUICK SKETCH Jehoram I ascended the throne after the untimely accidental death of his brother Ahaziah I, a nd was immediately confronted with the revolt of Mesha, king of Moab, who had refused to pa y tribute. The kingdom of Israel had been allied to that of Judah since the time of Ahab, s o Jehoram I and Jehoshaphat devised a plan to attack Moab from its relatively unprotected sou thern frontier. Edom, a dependency of Judah, would help with soldiers and supplies. Their lin e of march proceeded around the south end of the Dead Sea, where the army suffered heavily fr om thirst. Jehoshaphat suggested they consult the prophet Elisha as to what should be done. Elisha, afte r rebuking Jehoram I for Israel’s sins, agreed to help for the sake of the godly Jehoshaphat . Trenches were dug across the dry Wadi Arabah, which were filled by storm run-off the next m orning, relieving the thirst of the army. At the same time, the reddish-looking water seeme d to be blood to the Moabites, overlooking from above. The Moabites rushed down for the spoil , thinking the army had turned on each other. In their pell-mell invasion they were slaughter ed, and then followed back to their homeland. Mesha, king of Moab, retreated to his last unconquered city, Kirharaseth, for the final battl e against Jehoram I and his allies. Mesha then offered his first-born son as a burnt sacrific e to his god Chemosh on the wall of his city, in sight of the Israelites. The attackers, disg usted, broke off the siege and returned to their homeland. [This was later recorded on the Mo abite Stone.] Later in the reign of Jehoram I, Ben-Hadad II of Syria caused problems to the east of Israel , and Jehoram I and the prophet Elisha alternate in friendship and hatred. When things went w ell, Elisha was held in esteem, but when a famine threatened Israel, Elisha was blamed. Meanw hile, Jehoram and Ahaziah II, now king of Judah, were allied in the attack on Ramoth-gilead . Jehoram I was lodged at Jezreel recovering from a wound received previously in the battle . Jehu, the Israelite general directing the battle in the absence of the kings, returned to J ezreel. Jehu had received word from the prophetic party [Elisha?] that the two kings were tog ether and vulnerable, and now was his opportunity to end the dynasty of Omri. Jehu was traveling across the land of Naboth, which had been falsely taken by Ahab, when Jeho ram I and Ahaziah II rode out to meet him. Jehu shot Jehoram I through the heart with an arro w, then ordered his body dumped in the field. Ahaziah II, attempting to flee, was wounded, al though he managed to get to Megiddo before dying. Jehoram I was the last descendant of the ho use of Omri, and we can assume Jehu, who took over the throne, eradicated all relatives of Je horam I. (http://www.ancientroute.com/people/Jehoram1.htm) JORAM OF ISRAEL Of Joram, the son of Ahab, it can only be said that he had his father's faults without his fa ther's virtues. Ahab was liberal, Joram miserly, nay, he even indulged in usurious practices . From [Elijah associate] Obadiah, the pious protector of the Prophets in hiding, he exacte d a high rate of interest on the money needed for their support. As a consequence, at his dea th he fell pierced between his arms, the arrow going out at his heart, for he had stretched o ut his arms to receive usury, and had hardened his heart against compassion. 53 In his reig n only one event deserves mention, his campaign against Moab, undertaken in alliance with th e kings of Judah and Edom, and ending with a splendid victory won by the allied kings. Jora m and his people, it need hardly be said, failed to derive the proper lesson from the war. Th eir disobedience to God's commands went on as before. The king of Moab, on the other hand, i n his way sought to come nearer to God. He assembled his astrologers and inquired of them, wh y it was that the Moabites, successful in their warlike enterprises against other nations, co uld not measure up to the standard of the Israelites. They explained that God was gracious t o Israel, because his ancestor Abraham had been ready to sacrifice Isaac at His bidding. The n the Moabite king reasoned, that if God set so high a value upon mere good intention, how mu ch greater would be the reward for its actual execution, and he, who ordinarily was a sun wor shipper, proceeded to sacrifice his son, the successor to the throne, to the God of Israel. G od said: "The heathen do not know Me, and their wrong-doing arises from ignorance; but you, I sraelites, know Me, and yet you act rebelliously toward Me." 54 As a result of the seven years' famine, conditions in Samaria were frightful during the grea t part of Joram's reign. In the first year everything stored in the houses was eaten up. In t he second, the people supported themselves with what they could scrape together in the fields . The flesh of the clean animals sufficed for the third year; in the fourth the sufferers res orted to the unclean animals; in the fifth, the reptiles and insects; and in the sixth the mo nstrous thing happened that women crazed by hunger consumed their own children as food. But t he acme of distress was reached in the seventh year, when men sought to gnaw the flesh from t heir own bones. 55 To these occurrences the prophecies of Joel apply, for he lived in the awf ul days of the famine in Joram's reign. Luckily, God revealed to Joel at the same time how Israel would be rescued from the famine. T he winter following the seven years of dearth brought no relief, for the rain held back unti l the first day of the month of Nisan. When it began to fall, the Prophet said to the people , "Go forth and sow seed

" But they remonstrated with him, "Shall one who hath saved a measur e of wheat or two measures of barely not use his store for food and live, rather than for see d and die?" But the Prophet urged them, "Nay, go forth and sow seed." And a miracle happened . In the ant hills and mouse holes, they found enough grain for seed, and they cast it upon t he ground on the second, the third, and the fourth day of Nisan. On the fifth day of the mont h rain fell again. Eleven days later the grain was ripe, and the offering of the 'Omer coul d be brought at the appointed time, on the sixteenth of the month. Of this the Psalmist was t hinking when he said, "They that sow in tears shall reap in joy." 56
